Thank you @cska-canada.bsky.social for having me and my colleague Commander Joanna Stolp from Tasmania Police contribute to the research symposium on Trauma-Informed Practice. It was an honour to talk about our work from the antipodes. #traumainformed #policing @utas.edu.au

The recent Productivity Commission report (www.pc.gov.au/ongoing/repo...) shows that Tasmania Police is a leader on several key performance indicators for police in Australia. Very proud of our police in our state. @utas.edu.au

First Board meeting of the Global Law Enforcement and Public Health Association (GLEPHA). Delighted to work with these extraordinary individuals, on behalf of our community of practitioners, scholars, and advocates.
New initiatives, two conferences this year (looking forward to Ottawa and Sydney).

Excited about the work that our team is doing on #bail, #police and #police prosecutors. Emma Colvin (CSU) and I have just submitted a draft article on our analysis of the police prosecutors' decision making process to grant or refuse bail to vulnerable people. Very much looking forward to feedback.

Yesterday, a colleague & I submitted a draft chapter that we wrote JUST FOR FUN. How cool is this? It's about finding new communities to sustain well-being, mental health & resilience within and outside the workplace. The chapter is for an upcoming book edited by @rellypops.bsky.social & colleagues

I really can't complain about my lack of flu symptoms, but the loss of smell and taste really sucks. Do not recommend, and totally blaming husband for bringing that home with him.

Really? Never had a problem with my applications, not even the high risk ones (for which I do receive questions, though, or requests for further detail). I have served on the ethics board for many years too, and know how the system works, but still! Your experience sounds harrowing.

a man is standing in a doorway holding a stack of papers in his hands . ALT: a man is standing in a doorway holding a stack of papers in his hands .

Also, in last weekend's news, I tested positive for COVID for the very first time.

Zero 'flu-like' symptom, nothing except for loss of taste and smell (I actually only tested because something I knew was quite flavoursome did not taste like what it should).

Really???

Academics often think of ethics as an obstacle. I think of it as a tool to work through the technicalities of fieldwork. Once embraced, it's a fairly straightforward process. Delighted that our PhD student Rosie Martin (@amandalneil.bsky.social) received ethics approval with no request for change.

We aim to test the impact of a new national curriculum for public and personal safety training (PPST) developed by the College of Policing, which aims to reduce the use of force by police. We conduct a large-scale Stepped Wedge Pragmatic Controlled Trial with a single police force and 1843 participating police officers. Officers were assigned to be trained during a particular week of the year. We find statistically significant reductions in the use of force by police officers as a result of the training. These effects are a reduction of between 8.0% and 10.9% in the propensity to use force in a given week compared to the counterfactual. The effect is accompanied by a significant reduction in the likelihood of injury to civilians, and no rise in the risk of harm to officers. We conclude that the PPST curriculum appears effective at reducing use of force by police in a large scale, robust trial.

A new scenario-based, evidence-informed, officer-safety training course for UK police led to a 10% reduction in use of force and no increase in injuries to officers.
