I agree. I think people were probably analyzing the totals vs the split so closely given the situation (and if anything else was on the ballot, it might have added up to a different total), they wanted to be thorough. But yeah it could've been explained better in the post.

No, I think the posts are describing two different events. The initial machine recount had the Dem winning by 1. Then the manual recount had him winning by 5, but he was ahead in both cases.
The article says he won by 5.
