This 'Folly' fancy dress from around 1883-6 was presumably based on a design in 1882 'Fancy Dresses Described' by Ardern Holt (seen on the left). An absolute riot of personality to slap you in the face on a gloomy Monday morning
My love for sculptural ceramics definitely shows with the three objects I picked for this story introducing the new @artukdotorg.bsky.social ceramics project I am part of:

An evening coat from the V&A collection. This collection picture shows just the Pale pink silk heavily gathered at the chest coming across the right hand shoulder to meet a length of trim in tarnished golden colour, woven with an eye shaped design.
This image from the V&A collection shows a close up of the woven trim. Embroidered eye shapes in a tarnished looking shade of golden thread. The design has eye shapes and columns running in strips of about 5cm (by the looks of it)
This is tantalizing!
Pink silk satin
Gold-thread embroidered net at collar & applied at an asymmetrical angle at the back of neck and at the cuffs.
Voluminous balloon sleeves
two large lead-weighted bows.
Swathe of draped silk satin falls from one shoulder
Grecian drape

11.01.2025 20:41 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Do we assume fabric never matched because fabric was not in abundance and what was used, was used up. Continuous patterns in garments, a total luxury ..entered the system...from what date ish...?
11.01.2025 19:55 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0These sleeve panels were meant to be worn under a gown or bodice with open sleeves. They gave the impression of a lavishly decorated smock or waistcoat under the bodice of the gown but were cheaper & less bulky to wear. #English, 1615-1625

A white tule and sequined party dress. Silver braiding around the neck, arms, waist and hem. The arms are short and puffy the waist to the hem is gathered and puffs outwards. Delicious beyond words.
A child's party dress. 19th century. Tule and sequins. Little puff sleeves. Silver braiding. For perhaps a 2 or 3 year old child because of the size. how special is that! Imagine...where this little party dress was worn and for whos party....π₯²

A close-up detail of a painting. Most of the image is filled with part of a long white skirt, hanging in folds, covered with intricate and colourful motifs such as a three red lilies, two yellow irises, a purple and yellow sea monster with tusks, a green snake with an open mouth, a white swan raising its wings, an orange and yellow butterfly, two pansies, a black and white bird with a neck like a goose and long pink legs, and others. The scale is not realistic; flowers are larger than animals. In the top left corner is a red velvet pillow with a large, complex tassel on the corner. To the right of that, partially cut off by the edge of the image, is a large piece of jewellery with black stones and three large teardrop pearls. A red cord hangs down from this and loops back up.
For #FlowersonFriday, a detail of the Hardwick Hall Portrait of Queen Elizabeth I with iris, lily, pansy, strawberry and other plants worked amongst waterfowl, sea monsters and snakes on her petticoat. Is it an embroidered or painted or imaginary skirt? What do you think?

Fun fact about Frank Stella. He loved Gee's Bend quilts. He loved them so much that some of his paintings look remarkably like quilts. Until recently, who was admired & praised most often? Who was shown in galleries? Stella or quilters? Guess.
