Rewatched this myself this morning. Great indictment of American exceptionalism. Michael Ritchie is definitely one of the great under-heralded voices of New Hollywood.

I was among those who bought On The Shore purely on the strength of its cover; it immediately became one of my favorite albums and was, in my twenties, my true gateway into late 60s/early 70s folk rock (Fairport had failed to grab me as a teen, the lysergic heft of Trees was more to taste).

Probably been a quarter century since I last saw it, but I loved that film in high school. Still one of the first ones I think of when Kilmer's name comes up.

I don't want to sound cynical, and I certainly will take any Trump resistance I can get, but this is first and foremost Booker starting his 2028 campaign.

Not that tour, but caught both films at IFC in 2013. We spoke afterwards about Stanley Kubrick, Andre Breton, Charles Manson, Tom Phillips, and, if memory serves, Neil Postman. Wild films; erudite man.

Don't know about perfect, but if I'm being honest to my 16yo self (didn't get into Modest Mouse, Apples in Stereo, The White Stripes for another year) these were the contemporaneous releases with the heaviest rotation (although technically Midnite Vultures came out two days before my 16th birthday).

That sure sounds like Paul at the end. I'm sure someone who is either AI-savvy or has encyclopedic knowledge of the extant tapes would be able to cross reference what's here with all the known studio chatter and identify from where -- if it's a fake -- it originates.

Spent some time speaking with Shane Carruth at IFC Center during grad school, right around the time I was going deep on Upstream Color for an essay on that and Berberian Sound Studio. Seemed a decent, gracious dude at the time. Unfortunate how his life and career have turned out.

Really feeling the professed "loving everyday" radiating from this woman whose hobbies include castigating her family and killing things.
