Make Electricity Cheap Again - part 1. We succeeded in making "Electrify Everything" an idea. We failed to make electricity cheap. Lets make electricity cheap again.

The best thing the US could do right now -- for its economy or for decarbonization -- is make electricity cheaper. Here's how:

Note the very top priority:

1. Get as much electricity as you can from local solar. This has two components…

a. Make rooftop solar the cheapest form of energy anywhere & do as much as possible.

b. Get as much as you can from local commercial and public-space solar that is within the “community.”

This is an absolutely fascinating article about a very bizarre event. Obviously from my perspective the most interesting angle here is the fact that ChatGPT is clearly just spinning SCP-esque containment documentation at Lewis

How great is it that we invented programs that think* and the best way we can control them is to: be very very careful about what they learn and ask them nicely not to think bad things. So great!

Thoughts on Motivation and My 40-Year Career I’ve never published an essay quite like this. I’ve written about my life before, reams of stuff actually, because that’s how I process what I think, but never for public consumption. I’ve been pus…

New post up, with a bunch of thoughts on what drives me personally, and my own 40-year career (h/t @lethain.com).

I have a pretty unusual life story. But one of the reasons I love the tech industry so much is how common unusual stories like mine have historically been.

I find Vercel's "verifying your browser" interstitial so rage inducing. Like WTF? This is the web - just serve the page!

Deleting the Google app from the iOS devices from older relatives has taken the place of removing Windows toolbars 20 years ago. Surprising that Apple allows this since it degrades the whole device experience.

I really do not need a text, email, and mobile alert every time I sign in to anything. Make it stop. 😞

I had fun as always on @catalyst-pod.bsky.social this week. There's just so much power sector information to wrassle with these days, some of it deeply useful, some of it silly, all of it public and accessible if you can apply technology to it. podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/f...

The laziness continues… it added the documentation for the CLI I asked it to create to the README but the actual code was all placeholders. LOL.

Fair warning though, all AIs are lazy but Claude Code is lazy AF. I have not discovered a way to effectively prompt around this yet.

How good is Claude Code? I upgraded to the $100/mth Max plan rather than wait 3 hours for my token limit to reset. QED.

nb: I have not hit the token limit on Max yet but I will keep trying.

Just seeing this: Elasticsearch has gotten support for query time joins (more specifically lookup joins: left outer joins, targeting a one-shard index with 2B docs max).

There should be a law of sorts that every query language is bound to converge on SQL semantics.

I know this runs counter to a lot of advice but… Do not try to improve on the things you’re awful at. You’re probably always going to be bad at them.

Instead focus on the things you’re good at. Rise to the absolute top at those things. The rest either doesn’t matter or can be outsourced.

If Florida is prioritizing the wellbeing of students they’ve an amazing opportunity to end commercial contracts with junk food vendors, promote gun reforms, improve mental health programs, and introduce more books into schools.

Just kidding, they don’t care about any of that, only shitting on DEI.
