Send us your paper proposals on James Baldwin's Istanbul!

I'm happy to be a co-convener of this year's Keyman Modern Turkish Studies conference alongside İpek Kocaâmer Yosmaoğlu. We're looking forward to a great conference in Istanbul with the support of Sabancı University.

One thing you will never think after reading a great book or listening to a great album or seeing a great piece of art is, β€œI’m really glad this person remained cautious while they were making this and guarded against being perceived as weird.”

Universities do not exist to 'train', produce 'skills' or generate 'impact'. They exist to create new knowledge and teach about it. Any assertion to the contrary is in error, and is destroying everything it touches.

The key benefit of a humanities education is in all likelihood a person is going to go through several careers over the course of their life because the economy is chaos and a humanities education 1) ideally equips you with a broad basic toolkit and 2) gives you the skills to learn on your own

wherein is a lamp
(the lamp in a glass,
the glass as it were a glittering star)
kindled from a Blessed Tree,

"Evidence is always partial. Facts are not truth, though they are part of it -information is not knowledge. And history is not the past - it is the method we have evolved of organizing our ignorance of the past."

Thank you for the welcome! This is at the LACMA, from the Mughal Empire, circa 1600-1605. One of my personal favorites. When you look at the whole painting you can see his robe is covered with embroidered hunting scenes.
