Hmm Work in HE learning & teaching, particularly student engagement & learning analytics. Also, love the Peak District and TTRPGs. Mostly here for the jokes. Apologies if discussion about pedagogy is interrupted with DND jokes and vice versa.

Being the natural doubter, I just went back and checked. There are the two feuding brothers just down the corridor from one another, but it feels very overloaded with lizard men, trogdolytes, giant insects, goblins, skeletons, nandies, stirges etc

Map of the Halls of Tizun Thane.

Sorry - I think Albie Fiore was a great writer, but this is a bad ‘3 bugbears live two doors down from 6 kobolds’ scenarios.

As a setting - it’s exquisite. In the middle is the C 02 wizard mini I used for Thane in the scenario (not to scale with the map)

The pub I went to last night was cash only, so I have a tenner in my wallet for the first time in ages (started with two before you ask). I have no idea who’s on the note.

To be fair to them it’s not the BoE’s job. But yes I’m heartily sick of faux outrage culture wars

The Lichway would be my vote. It’s a little bit creepy and mysterious

I have run the Hall of Tizun Thane as a rescue, before it goes to hell (sorry Andy, we never finished it). I feel strongly that it’s a great setting if the tensions in the court are intact, but it’s a lousy dungeon crawl as written.

When I was spinning up speculations about a post-capitalist rentier economy, I didn't have the vision to think of human consciousness itself being enclosed, commodified and sold back to us as a monthly subscription. Mostly because that doesn't even make sense as a science fiction conceit, but still.

On the train. Didn’t check my language. But I hope my point still stands.

Of the two main sources of income to an institution - income from teaching students & income from research activity, I would be surprised is less than 80% of income arises from teaching students.

Obvs this reply was complacent - but there’s a tonne of nonsense in tech that never lives up to the hype

Not wishing to be complacent, but Universities were supposed to have disappeared in 2012

What proportion of Hallam’s income comes from the teaching grant? They’re putting the very people who justify that income onto worse contracts. Tossers

Sheffield Hallam restricts TPS access to REF academics only Teaching staff at post-92 institution to be employed by subsidiary firm and lose right to access expensive pensions scheme

'Teaching-only staff at Sheffield Hallam University are set to be moved into a subsidiary firm, leaving research intensive scholars the only academics still being employed directly by the institution.'

Utterly inequitable & betrays a fundamental misunderstanding of the teaching/research nexus. 1/3

Goodhart’s law never dies:

“When a measure becomes a target, it ceases to be a good measure".

In this case measuring the proportion of research active staff has encouraged behaviour where the non research active are no longer classified as staff.

Maybe it should matter that the President of the United States threatened the lives of the Iranian soccer team, who can say

Same for Palantir - they should not be offered contracts by govt departments or agencies in the UK which gives them leverage over critical state functions. It's an overtly evil organisation run by fascists.

“Elon Musk’s Tesla given go-ahead to supply electricity in Great Britain.” A subheading underneath says: “Ofgem licence means firm can replicate Texas setup of powering homes, businesses and EVs.”

Ed Miliband must step in and bar Tesla from holding an energy licence.

Elon Musk is a threat to our national security and clearly not a fit person to operate in our energy industry.

We can’t have the lights go out because he’s having a strop on X.

No-one is finally dead until the ripples they cause in the world die away - until the clock he wound up winds down, until the wine she made has finished its ferment, until the crop they planted is harvested. The span of someone's life... is only the core of their actual existence.

Eleven years since Terry Pratchett went for a curry with Death. I remember sobbing for days and tbh I still feel it from time to time.
@rhi.bsky.social thanks for lending the rest of us your dad.

I found the opposite. Well I think that some of the reds specifically, particularly cold red/pink were harder to spot. I’ll be pondering this all day

I’m currently on the train to that there London, so phone for me. My monitor at home is good, or would be interesting to see if I get a different score. One of my sons has red/green colour blindness, so I wondered if I might do badly at this.

There were no faces on British banknotes at all - not even the Queen - until 1963

So only 12 people had yet appeared on notes from 1970-2005

The special relationship is broken
In Trump's era, the historic bond between the US and the UK counts for nothing
By Freddie Hayward

I feel like the correct phrase here is not “broken”, so much as it is “embarrassingly exposed as the self-serving and ultimately disastrous horseshit of the British ruling class”.

Im now in a quiet space and put on some concentrating music (ie light classical stuff). It’s at the same volume as I had on the train it and hurt my ears because it was al noisy. It’s fascinating how LOUD the world is. #YeahAndThatsNotVeryProfoundIsItEd?

Net zero will cost less than fossil fuel price rise, UK climate adviser says Climate Change Committee report comes after days of turbulence in global energy markets

For every pound spent on net zero, the benefits would outweigh the cost by between 2.2 and 4.1 times says @thecccuk.bsky.social
