Using wild-animal tracking for detecting and managing disease outbreaks
Zoonotic diseases increasingly threaten human and wildlife populations, driving a
global rise in mass-mortality outbreaks, including the ongoing avian influenza panzootic
in wildlife and zoonotic spil...
Weβre tagging more wild animals than ever β so how can this data be used for early alert, detection, and better management of zoonotic outbreaks?
So excited this piece is finally out, with an amazing team.

While scouting for a spot to trap wintering black kites, we found them roosting in a date palm plantation near a large compost facility. The trees were too tall for trapping, but seeing thousands of birds arriving at their roost at dusk was simply magical.

Over the past 7 years, we've tracked 120+ cranes migrating from Russia to the Middle East, crossing either the Black Sea or the Caucasus. This year, one crane switched routes halfway - proof that tagged animals never stop surprising us! π¦ Data collected with Ran Nathan's Movement Ecology Lab."
