The Nakajima A6M2-N Rufe was a single-seat floatplane interceptor developed as a stopgap to protect remote island bases and amphibious forces while purpose-built float fighters were pending. It was essentially a Mitsubishi A6M2 Zero (Model 11) modified with a central float and wingtip stabilizer floats. First flown on 7 Dec 1941, it entered service in 1942 and 327 were built. Compared to the land-based Zero, the Rufe was heavier and slower (max speed ~435 km/h vs ~533 km/h), but retained much of the Zero’s agility. It carried the same basic armament (2×20 mm cannons, 2×7.7 mm MGs) and could carry small bombs or rockets. Rufe units primarily served in the Solomon Islands, Aleutians, Dutch East Indies and home waters, operating from seaplane bases and tenders. Early on, many Rufes were lost in the Solomons (e.g. Tulagi, Aug 1942); they saw action intercepting US bombers (B‑17s, B‑24s) and defending island convoys. By 1944 they were outmatched by modern fighters, and production ceased Sept 1943.

The Petlyakov Pe-8 (originally designated TB-7) was a Soviet heavy bomber developed in the mid-1930s to meet requirements for a modern long-range strategic bomber to replace the aging Tupolev TB-3. The design team was led by Vladimir Petlyakov in the Tupolev design bureau, and the aircraft first flew on 27 December 1936. It entered service in 1940 and remained the only four-engined bomber fielded by the Soviet Air Forces in World War II. Production was limited by technological and supply challenges, and only about 93 aircraft were built by 1944.

HMS Royal Sovereign was a British pre-dreadnought battleship of the Royal Sovereign class, built for the Royal Navy under the Naval Defence Act 1889. Thew other seven member of the class were: HMS Empress of India (1891), HMS Repulse (1892), HMS Hood (1891), HMS Ramillies (1892), HMS Resolution (1892), HMS Revenge (1892) and HMS Royal Oak (1892)She was laid down at Portsmouth Dockyard on 30 September 1889, launched on 26 February 1891, and commissioned into service on 31 May 1892. The ship was decommissioned on 9 September 1909 and sold for scrap on 7 October 1913.

The Royal Sovereign class represented the Royal Navy’s first standardized pre-dreadnought design under the expansive naval construction programme authorised by the Naval Defence Act 1889. The Act aimed to maintain British maritime supremacy through a “two-power standard”; a fleet equal to or greater than the combined strength of the next two largest navies.

Operational History
Upon commissioning in 1892, Royal Sovereign served as flagship of the Channel Fleet. She fulfilled routine fleet duties, including training exercises, diplomatic port visits, and ceremonial functions.

In 1897 she was transferred to the Mediterranean Fleet. She returned to British waters in 1902 and was briefly assigned as a guard ship before undergoing a major refit in 1903–1904.

By the mid-1900s, rapid naval technological advances, particularly the advent of all big-gun dreadnought battleships rendered Royal Sovereign and her sisters obsolete. She entered reserve status in 1905, was decommissioned in 1909, and sold for scrap in 1913.

The Ilyushin Il-22 was the first Soviet jet-engined bomber to fly on 24 July 1947. Powered by four Lyulka TR-1 turbojets, it was under powered, as the engines only produced 80% of their planned thrust. As a result, the Il-22 was unable to meet its design criteria and further development was cancelled on 22 September 1947.

The D.520 Z was a late-war development of the Dewoitine D.520 fighter intended to significantly improve performance through the installation of a more powerful engine and incremental aerodynamic refinement. The project originated during the German occupation of France and later re-emerged briefly in the post-war reconstruction of the French aviation industry.

Argentina purchased 30 Fiat G.55A fighters and 15 G.55B trainers in 1947. The aircraft were shipped from Italy in crates and assembled locally, entering service later that year. They were assigned primarily to fighter units based at El Plumerillo in Mendoza, where they were used both as operational interceptors and as advanced trainers for pilots transitioning to modern, high-performance monoplanes.

Adamastor was an unprotected cruiser of the Portuguese Navy commissioned in 1897. Adamastor undertook numerous overseas deployments to Portuguese colonies in Africa and Asia. She made goodwill and training cruises, including visits to Brazil and the Far East, reflecting Portugal’s global maritime connections.

Her most politically significant moment occurred during the Republican revolution of 5 October 1910. The ship’s crew sided with the revolutionaries and Adamastor participated in the bombardment of the royal palace at Necessidades.
Adamastor was decommissioned in 1933 and subsequently scrapped.
