We get a lot of storms round here, on the northern edge of Ireland.

Wind howls, rain lashes, the sky hovers just above the ground.

I painted this during one, distracting myself from the sound of slates coming off the roof.

The image captures a solitary, discarded shopping trolley partially submerged on a wide, wet beach under a cloudy, overcast sky.
Taken on the beach at Maryport, Cumbria, England on an overcast January day.
It shows a bleak, expansive coastal landscape with a moody atmosphere.
The main subject is a blue and black wire shopping trolley, abandoned in the wet sand.
The horizon is distant, with faint hills visible in the background across the water.
The tide is out with the grey-white clouds and tiny pockets of blue sky reflected in the wet brown sand.
In the far distance across the Solway Firth to Scotland is the faint outline of Criffel Hill

This image captures a stark, low-angle perspective of a massive mobile mast, soaring upwards into a turbulent, overcast sky.
The composition is intensely vertical, with the cylindrical base of the tower dominating the upper foreground. It tapers dramatically as it recedes toward the centre of the frame, creating a powerful sense of scale and industrial might. The tower's surface is a uniform, matte off-white, showing subtle textures and faint streaks that hint at its exposure to the elements.
At the vanishing point, the tower culminates in the mast's hub. Though small from this distance, the intricate structural details are visible, including the dark, geometric housing. This focal point sits near the centre, appearing almost like a crown atop the long, slender pedestal. The perspective makes the structure seem infinitely tall, disappearing into the heavy cloud cover that fills the background.
The sky is a dramatic canvas of deep greys and muted blues. Thick, roiling clouds of an approaching storm of high wind is fitting for the subject matter. Light is diffused through the heavy atmosphere, creating a soft, shadowless illumination on the tower that emphasises its smooth, rounded form. The contrast between the clean, engineered lines of the white tower and the chaotic, organic textures of the dark clouds creates a striking visual tension.
The overall mood is one of quiet power and isolation. The solitary structure stands as a monument to modern engineering against the vastness of nature. There are no other landmarks, people, or buildings to provide a sense of place, focusing all attention on the relationship between the machine and the sky.
The photograph conveys the immense height and structural integrity required, capturing a moment of stillness within a dynamic and atmospheric environment. It is a minimalist yet grand study of form and scale.

This solar energy farm in Kosovo doesn't just produce energy it also feeds the local animals. Every week sheep and goats are brought in and graze to their heart's content.

We have so many solutions. Implement them.

Tammy Abraham always impressed me - didn't he score a winner for Bristol City against #lufc Elland Road one year, pre-Bielsa? His goals record is pretty consistently good, he's mobile and adaptable. If Villa can get him for £18m that looks like good business to me.

It’s not a rich list – it’s gone far beyond that. We need to talk about ‘extreme wealth’ | Dhananjayan Sriskandarajah We recognise extreme poverty as ruinous, but this turbo-charged affluence is deeply damaging too. Treat it as such, says Dhananjayan Sriskandarajah of the New Economics Foundation

2. These are literal saints and holy cow are they boring!

Sending babies to nursery completely reshapes their microbiomes Socializing at a young age helps to develop greater diversity in their microbiota, according to an analysis of baby-to-baby transmission of gut bacteria.

A few months at nursery gives a roughly 1-year-old baby more new microbes for its gut microbiome than it has acquired in its WHOLE LIFE up until that point from its family. 🤯
