"But in the end, itโ€™s only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer." - J.R.R. Tolkien

Thatโ€™s the vibe Iโ€™ve gotten from the trailers.

Hoping that Academy will follow the usual Trek formula of getting better after a rough first season.

Your bsky timeline is what you make it. There is no algorithm, so tailor your experience to suit your needs/tastes.
(Also if you have people constantly โ€˜woke scoldingโ€™ you, maybe youโ€™re a shitty person?)

3 panel comic

Panel 1:
Two characters are lying on a conveyor belt that is slowly feeding them into a meat grinder. A Pink Guy is closest to the grinder. He is duct taped and tied up. A Blue Guy in sun glasses is next to him. He is not tied up and there is a lever saying โ€œStopโ€ above his head.
Pink Guy yells, โ€œHELP! PULL THE LEVER!โ€
Blue Guy casually says โ€œNo can do, bro. Empathy is toxicโ€

Panel 2:
The Pink Guy is crushed by the grinder as the Blue Guy folds his arms across his chest and says โ€œCaring is weakness, broโ€

Panel 3:
The Blue Guy starts to get crushed by the grinder. His agonised last words are โ€œWhatโ€™s in it for me, bro?โ€

When I said I wanted to live in Star Wars as a kid I did not mean in the cursed monkey paw way. I just wanted a lightsaber.

I think a lot about how we as a culture have turned "forever" into the only acceptable definition of success.

Like... if you open a coffee shop and run it for a while and it makes you happy but then stuff gets too expensive and stressful and you want to do something else so you close it, it's a "failed" business. If you write a book or two, then decide that you don't actually want to keep doing that, you're a "failed" writer. If you marry someone, and that marriage is good for a while, and then stops working and you get divorced, it's a "failed" marriage.

The only acceptable "win condition" is "you keep doing that thing forever". A friendship that lasts for a few years but then its time is done and you move on is considered less valuable or not a "real" friendship. A hobby that you do for a while and then are done with is a "phase" - or, alternatively, a "pity" that you don't do that thing any more. A fandom is "dying" because people have had a lot of fun with it but are now moving on to other things.

I just think that something can be good, and also end, and that thing was still good. And it's okay to be sad that it ended, too. But the idea that anything that ends is automatically less than this hypothetical eternal state of success... I don't think that's doing us any good at all.

Mind that weird period of pushback on Lord of the Rings? Folk saying it was bad actually. Absolute loser behaviour, nobody was impressed.

I've had impromptu TED talks with my friends about the intense irony in calling your mass surveillance scam "Plantir." We could probably solve the energy crisis by hooking up a turbine to Tolkien's rapidly spinning corpse.

We didn't survive and thrive as a species because we had warriors or hunters - pretty much every omnivore can manage that.

We did so because we developed Grandmothers, and domesticated Dogs.

Community is what defines us as a species, and every "self-reliant" libertarian shitweasel be damned.

Bsky can be hard for people to get started on because it doesn't spoon feed you engaging rage bait and it's entirely what you make it.

Take control of what you're seeing. Cultivate your feeds. Remember when it gets "boring" that's okay because then you sign off and do better things with your time.

As I get older I am becoming more and more convinced that there is a cohort in every community that only leaves their homes and drives between Nov. 15 and Jan. 2.
Itโ€™s the only way to explain the extreme density of people who seem acutely unfamiliar with the norms of society.
