He was notified about the deportation flight two months in advance. Like Awad, he said, ICE agents confiscated Zeidan’s ID and Palestinian passport and never returned them. Health care and food aid, among the most life-saving interventions, were not protected. Food aid funding dropped 40%. More than 2,000 health clinics in crisis zones were shuttered. Communities began resorting to “negative coping,” a famine-warning pattern that includes consuming seed stocks, selling productive assets, sinking into debt, survival sex, and child marriage. These measures keep people alive short term but severely impact long-term survival, he writes. All of this devastation flows from a $10B cut in U.S. humanitarian support, what Konyndyk notes is a rounding error in a $7T federal budget.

PBS reports on Sudan’s civil and proxy war, documenting a catastrophic humanitarian collapse as famine spreads and civilians continue to bear the brunt of the fighting. Recently, the army broke a two-year RSF siege of Kadugli, but survivors in the South Kordofan city still describe extreme hunger, ongoing drone attacks, and children dying in camps. Aid workers report families eating leaves and grass to survive, with deadly poisoning cases across the area. The nearly three-year conflict between the Sudanese army (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has displaced around 14 million people and killed an estimated 40,000. With fighting now shifting east from Darfur into oil-rich Kordofan, civilian casualties are continuing, war crimes allegations are mounting, and acute malnutrition now affects more than half of children under 5 in parts of Darfur and Kordofan.

We are doing our best to stabilise and refer the patients, but the hospital does not have the capacity to treat critical cases,” explains MSF staff in Tine.
