Sorry I try not to reblog/retweet off-theme things to this account but this one made me laugh out loud, so please bear with me

I constantly think about—daydream about, even—how Douglas Adams was locked in a hotel room under the supervision of his editor until he finished his manuscript. God I wish that were me.

Reflecting on how you can't actually be FOR the "depiction" of something but AGAINST the "romanticization" of it, because the line between the two is completely arbitrary. For personal consumption, that's one thing, sure—avoid what you don't like. But as an enforceable policy? It's all or nothing.

No matter what set of rules you come up with that define "romanticization," there will always be depictions meant to romanticize that can get past it, and there will always be depictions meant to criticize it that will end up censored. You can't so easily label the nuances of the human experience.

As much as we may say the internet is forever, the digital is finite. One day, when everything we might have loved becomes lost media or unsearchable, you'll be grateful for the version you or others have saved.

One of the chief bits of advice I have for anyone on the internet is, save everything. Anything you enjoy, anything you have found useful. If you found an interesting academic article you used for a bit of writing, or just enjoyed reading, save a PDF of it.

It's so funny because yes this is true, but there's also the East Asian variant, "The Room You Can't Leave Unless You Have Sex," which I think is horrendously funny because the emotional stakes are lower (no risk of death), but the social stakes are the same (ability to return to society)

Hey, writing is hard—0/10, don't recommend

Whenever I'm in a fandom, I try to take advantage of my enthusiasm and channel it towards studying smth new. For ALNST, it was Korean poetry. For Transformers, it was mechanical engineering.

For Hazbin Hotel, of all things, it's ended up being Korean-US Immigration in the Early 20th Century.

Knowing too much about kink/BDSM really makes fandom an interesting experience sometimes because seeing "brat breaking" conflated with "brat taming" makes me sink my head into my hands… those are different things… I should be able to filter for them differently <— will never happen

And then in fiction, these principles can stretch further to include things of higher emotional or physical consequence (violence, blackmail, sexual coercion, etc.), and that's what makes it interesting—I think it's some of the most interesting character dynamics out there

One of my rogue opinions about fandom is that I believe, genuinely, that knowledge of BDSM and RACK (risk-aware consensual kink) helps adults understand varied and interesting adult relationships in fiction, even non-sexual ones. The principles involved are widely applicable:

Not that I think that anyone is wrong for giving weight to Word of God—just that I think it's important/helpful in fandom to keep the concepts distinct. It makes things easier to talk about + have more nuanced discussions. More words to describe specific things make communication more interesting.

(Niche take, I think it could even be argued that Word of God really is just a creator's own Headcanon, since "Headcanon" refers to an individual's personal interpretation of a story/character when it hasn't been explored in the original media property, i.e. doesn't contradict canon)

I think while understandable why this may be taken as true canon or a credible reference to win debates, I think it's valid to embrace Canon while rejecting Word of God. There's an argument to be made that if it was an important enough detail to canonize, it would have made it into the story.

Canon is what is presented directly in the media as it's published. "Word of God" is a statement from someone with the right to speak on the work, such as the creator or staff.

Thinking about how the delineation between "Canon" and "Word of God"/"Word of God Canon" seems to have become muddied over the years… I think it's an important part of the fandom experience to accept them as different concepts that people can ascribe different levels of authority.

So in the end the struggle still remains 'finishing fics' even if I write something shorter or different, truly a skill I need to work on… I would wish someone would lock me in a hotel room to write like Douglas Adams but I don't know if it would succeed in getting me to write ahahaha

Shaking your hand in ADHD, ahaha—same problem, different solutions I think! I think what's different for me is that the length of the piece doesn't matter—if it's a 500 word fic, I stall at 400, if it's a 8000 word fic, I stall at 6500… my final sprint demotivation is proportionate
