Outside academia, Romina loves sharing mate, listening to music, especially Argentine national rock, and spending time in her favorite place in the world: the hills of Tandil, Argentina.

Romina is especially passionate about fieldwork, from sampling lake sediments to talking with local communities near her study sites. She is involved in science outreach, particularly working with secondary school students close to the lakes she studies.

Her research targets the last millennia, aiming to reconstruct past environmental changes & identifying human impacts recorded in lake sediments. She also contributes paleomagnetic records from South America to improve our understanding of geomagnetic field behavior and the South Atlantic Anomaly.

Romina studied Physics and earned her PhD in Applied Sciences at Universidad Nacional del Centro de la Provincia de Buenos Aires (Argentina), focusing on paleomagnetism, rock magnetism, and geochemical analyses of lacustrine sediments from Argentina.

Romina is responsible for the international network and hosts our #IntoTheCore Podcast and Youtube channel

Lisa loves to travel the world and socialize, sometimes more with animals than humans though. Luckily she can combine travelling with hiking (preferably volcanoes) and water sports. Other hobbies include rock climbing and drawing. Her favorite food is pasta, which she eats multiple times per week.

As a Postdoc at the University of Göttingen, she studies what the Andean lake sediments can tell us about landscape evolution, natural hazards and human activity. This change in topic brought her to ICDP, however, she is not part of any official ICDP project (yet).

Her PhD thesis defended in December 2023 also at RWTH Aachen investigated offshore tsunami deposits off the coast of southern Portugal. Since then, she changed her topic towards high-mountain lakes in the tropical Andes.

Lisa studied Georesources Management with a focus on natural hazards at RWTH Aachen University in Germany. Her passion for fieldwork and drilling already started during her bachelor’s degree. Back then, she was focused on coastal and marine deposits to better understand tsunami processes.

Beyond science, Rodrigo is passionate about cinema, dancing, and music. A future dance trainer, former Estudiantina musician, and loyal Oscars’ season follower, he brings energy everywhere he goes. On stressful days, you’ll find him unwinding with Dua Lipa or a good reggaetón beat.

He is passionate about outreach and communication, having his own social media project and maintaining an active presence in front of the cameras. He now works as a postdoctoral researcher at the LIAG – Institute for Applied Geophysics, studying a 1.3-million-year-old record from ODP Site 663.

In 2021, he moved to Germany to pursue his PhD at TU Braunschweig, focusing on XRF measurements and biomarker analyses from the ICDP Site Lake Petén Itzá—a remarkable 400,000-year record.

Rodrigo studied Earth Sciences at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, where he completed his bachelor’s and master’s degrees. His passion for paleoclimatology began with the ICDP project MexiDrill Chalco in Mexico, where he worked on the sedimentology and stratigraphy.

Elena has managed to find classic American hobbies in Germany including softball and tap dancing. She loves to cook, but also going out and explore new foods. She loves listening to podcasts to keep up with the news but will never shy away from listening to Nicki Minaj to keep her motivated.

She’s done archaeological and geological fieldwork in South Africa and Angola, specializing in lake reconstructions using diatoms and geochemistry. Now based at the University of Cologne, Elena connects data, people, and ideas through outreach and education for the Hescor Project.

She discovered her love for deep time during an elective glaciology course while completing her Bachelor's at Oberlin College 🇺🇸. A Fulbright in Germany sparked her passion for archaeology and led to completing a Cotutelle PhD between the University of Tübingen 🇩🇪 and the University of Connecticut 🇺🇸.
