A black pen in crosshatch technique and black ink applied with a small roller on white paper illustration of a scene of Venice. A black Cat sits in a Gondola, Crows sit atop long poles that rise from the water. Water laps at the Gondola and a little wooden jetty, across the water hazy buildings, their lights just visible through a fog. Crows circle above. A dark figure of a man stands on the jetty by the Gondola on the left of the illustration. Mysterious.

Packing this ready to send off to its new home.

A Signal Man stands at the foot of steps that lead up to a Signal Box. He stares towards…something…a figure…standing at the mouth of a dark tunnel. A railway line running alongside the box heads into the tunnel. Light from within the signal box is the only source of illumination lighting up the tracks and rock faces in a dark, rocky and lonely ravine. Tree roots and a tangle of branches and trees at the top of the ravine. Bleak and foreboding. Black pen and printing ink on white paper. A dark figure walks along a country lane. The lane is bordered by hedges and tall leafless trees. The shape of a large dark house through the trees. Birds nest in the tree tops, a heavy and cloudy sky above them. Black pen and printing ink on white paper. A lonely and atmospheric scene. The only sound would be wind blowing in the tree tops and corvids cawing. A woman in a black funeral dress stands in a graveyard, she stares hard at us, she doesn’t look happy. Her face and hands are thin and pale and the skin around her eyes is dark. The gravestones have a bleak and abandoned look to them, the crumbling stone ruins of some sort of church or abbey in the near distance. Weak winter Sunlight reflects off of marshland and estuary water. A sky streaked with grey clouds. The sounds would be those of a cold wind whipping off the estuary and the call of an isolated bird overhead. Creepy, you wouldn’t want to be there. Or maybe you would because you’re weird like that? Black pen and printing ink on paper, the pen is crosshatched and the ink is applied with a small roller. A man in an old fashioned black uniform and cap, stares out from the window of a wooden signal box. He is only visible from waist height and above, his eyes are wide and his stubbly face is anxious as he stares at something unseen in the distance. Light from within the box contrasts with the dark star filled sky above. A line of trees run parallel with the box in the distance. Kind of cosy but with a strong feeling of anxiety and a feeling of being…haunted. Black pen and printing ink on white paper.

People performing on a stage seen from a slightly elevated angle. At the front of the stage three musicians with instruments are brightly lit by a low spotlight, other performers in the background are in shadow or sparsely lit. Huge shadows of the front three musicians are cast on silver chains that hang down to the floor at the back of the stage.

Chatting to two friendly booksellers at Piece Hall in Halifax the other day as they were skiving off & watching David Byrne on their phone, they’d secured tickets to see him perform there in the summer, I missed out. They’d seen him recently & said I MUST see the new show ☹️ This is him in Leeds 2018

Paul was born in 1947 in Tofino on Vancouver Island’s west coast. He was raised in Nanaimo, British Columbia.

After graduating from the Emily Carr School of Art and Design in the early 1970’s, he spent some time living and travelling in Europe, from Norway to the Greek Island of Mykonos.

After several business ventures and painting in his “spare” time, and with the encouragement from well known artists, Nixie Barton and Grant Leier, he started painting full time with success 20 years ago. He has painted since childhood, but considers himself an “overnight success after 55 years”.

Collectors appreciate his winning combination of fantasy, whimsy, patterns and colour. The whimsical paintings are full of questions and little gems of interest can be found every time you look at his paintings. His bright cheerful colours, and textures, with twisted houses and stretched or fat trees create interest in looking for more surprises. The paintings tell a story and create new perspectives with an interlocking puzzle of forms and shapes.

“My paintings are not intended to be a serious view of the world. I like work that involves imagination and technique, and suggests a story. I just want to make people happy looking at my paintings."

Drone view taken over the sea, looking at waves crashing onto a small rocky island below, and in the distance a flat brown headland with a black sand beach just visible and impressive pointy brown mountains (with a little snow on the left hand peak) above.

I've got much more confident with sending my drone further in the last year - doesn't phase me taking it over the open sea any more, 1-2km away. You get some good views of old favourites by doing so!

A photo from a drone of a tall bright orange lighthouse with some blue graffiti at the bottom, attached to a big metal caged tower. Behind is a just-visible figure (me) and behind is a mountain right sticking above fog. There is snow on the ground and mountain.

Don't think I took any other drone selfies on this trip. Lighthouse needs a paint...

A shot from the film ‘Fitzcarraldo’. A man with a shock of blond hair wears a white suit, black tie and straw hat as he stands looking knackered on a rocky hill. Behind him a boat sits at the foot of the hill, half in half out of a river. Daft lad.

Thinking about starting a new illustration.
