Unwanted pregnancies surge with alcohol, but not with cannabis, study finds Women who drank heavily, even though they strongly wished to avoid pregnancy, were 50% more likely to become pregnant than those who drank little or not at all, according to new research. Surprisingly, cannabis use didn t show the same risk.

Prenatal alcohol exposure is the leading preventable cause of birth defects in the United States. In the United States, up to 1 in 20 children has a fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD). This makes FASD more common than spina bifida, anencephaly, and autism, which affect 1 in 31 children.
