This is why I hate the emergence of a legal literature that undermines the plain text. The Citizenship Clause was created precisely to moot the debate. These newly fabricated theories and deeply problematic histories of citizenship were a central part of what the 14th Amendment was intended to stop.
When a professor kicks open the door and boldly claims they've learned 1,000 years of legal history in 3 months and that they have discovered something that has eluded academics for generations, it is fair to ask if it is serious historical work, and the onus is on them to answer questions.
