Claudette Colvin (born 1939) was a courageous African American teenager whose refusal to give up her bus seat in Montgomery, Alabama, nine months before Rosa Parks. Colvin was handcuffed, arrested, and forcibly removed from the bus while shouting that her constitutional rights were being violated. This event marked an important early act of resistance against racial segregation. Colvin was a member of the NAACP Youth Council and had been learning about the civil rights movement in school. At just 15 years old, Colvin’s bold stand challenged the entrenched Jim Crow laws of the South and helped set the stage for the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Despite her bravery, Colvin did not receive the same public recognition at the time, partly due to her youth and the fact that she was unmarried and pregnant. Nevertheless, she became one of the four plaintiffs in the landmark legal case Browder v. Gayle, which ultimately led to the Supreme Court ruling that segregation on public buses was unconstitutional. In 2021, the record of Colvin's arrest and adjudication of delinquency was expunged by the district court in the county where the charges against her had been brought more than 66 years earlier. Colvin’s story is a powerful reminder that the Civil Rights Movement was shaped by many activists, not just the most famous figures. Her act of resistance has been memorialized in poetry, books, songs, TV, a children’s picture book, and a biopic.
