🏴󠁧󠁒󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 People across Scotland told us what they think about the energy windfall tax.

We asked the public a simple question:

β€œEnergy companies have made large profits in recent years. Do you think it’s fair that they pay a windfall tax on those profits?”

Unsurprisingly the industry is lobbying politicians to scrap the levy.

The public can see the unfairness, and as long as people see the disparity between their own living conditions and the excess profits made by energy firms, support for the Windfall Tax will continue.

This comes as energy companies continue to make tens of billions in profits while households struggle with high bills.

Since 2020, oil and gas companies operating in the UK have made Β£125 billion in profits, and that’s with the Windfall Tax in place.

Surge in energy exit fees since 2021 Exit fees have increased by 345% in the last three years leaving some customers stuck paying more than April’s reduced price cap.

When the global gas market starts to spike, energy exit fees creep up.

Ofgem should act quickly to implement an exit fee ceiling to help protect consumers.

Here's a reminder of what our research found on this issue in 2024.

The only lasting way to protect households is to cut gas demand, invest in insulation and renewables, and reform how energy is priced in the UK.

Until then, UK households remain exposed.

➑️If high prices persist, they will feed into the next cap decision and could push bills back up from July.

This is the reality of a system still tied to volatile fossil fuel markets.

πŸ“ˆWholesale gas prices are rising again as international tensions shake global markets, now reaching levels higher than at any point in the past three years.

For now, households are protected by the current price cap. But that protection only delays the impact, it doesn’t remove the risk.

UK energy bills are tied to volatile global gas markets, so households remain exposed to shocks like this.

The lasting solution: cut demand through insulation, invest in homegrown renewables, and reform energy pricing so bills are no longer set by fossil fuel volatility.

Heating oil is also at a 12-month high, up 30% year on year, which is a major concern for rural households.

The immediate trigger is geopolitical tension in Iran and the wider region. But the real issue is our dependence on gas, with so much of it imported.

πŸ“ˆWholesale gas is now 13% up on 2025 so far.

That matters because gas still drives UK electricity prices, meaning this surge risks pushing up the energy price cap from 1 July 2026, which had been forecast to fall.

Energy bills set to fall 7% from 1 April under Ofgem price cap Changes to unit rates and standing charges under the Ofgem price cap mean energy bills will change dramatically from 1 April 2026.

This must be the start of real reform to bring bills down for good, not the moment government declares the crisis over.

Energy bills will fall slightly from April, but for millions of households, energy still isn’t affordable.

Costs remain hundreds of pounds above pre-crisis levels, and major changes to tariffs are still working through the system.

πŸ‘‰ Swipe for what the changes mean for households.

Cold weather shouldn’t mean cold homes, and smarter, faster support can make the difference.

Payments could be triggered automatically when dangerously low temperatures are forecast, so people can stay warm when it’s actually needed. The value of payments should be updated to reflect the swings in, often volatile, gas prices, so households aren’t left short when energy costs climb.

With temperatures dropping, Cold Weather Payments remain a vital lifeline for households facing high energy costs.

But support should arrive before the cold hits, not afterwards. .

Cold homes are still killing people in fuel poverty.

UKHSA figures showing over 2,500 cold-related deaths in England during winter 2024/25 are a stark reminder that fuel poverty is not just a cost issue, it is a public health emergency.

And this cap comes with major changes to how bills are made up, including shifts in standing charges and unit costs.

That means even people on fixed tariffs should check their bills carefully to ensure savings are passed on. Gas prices remain volatile and uncertainty hasn’t gone away.

Energy bills are likely to dip in April, but households shouldn’t be confused by the headline figure.

Forecasts suggest the average bill could fall to around Β£1,641, yet that would still be hundreds of pounds above pre-crisis levels.

Crucially, electricity pricing reform cannot be ignored. Unless clean power becomes more affordable, switching to low-carbon heating will remain too difficult for many families.

Heat pump installations are increasing - that’s an important step towards cutting emissions, but the pace of change still isn’t where it needs to be.

As gas markets continue to drive bill volatility and domestic supplies decline, households need a stable, long-term alternative for heating.

But lower costs don’t automatically mean lower bills. As clean power investment grows, we need transparency, fair limits on profits, and electricity pricing reform so savings are passed on to households.

Clean energy should mean lower bills too.
