Shaping Identity Through the Mobile Media of Tiktok | 46 | v2 | The Ro This chapter explores how identity practices emerge through TikTok as a form of mobile media, presenting three case studies that provide insights into how

The chapter is at the link below, super happy to see it published!

In the chapter we unpack TikTok as a platform that captures mobility, and explore how this shapes identity performances on the platform. We unpack memetic displays of gender & sexuality, dyadic identity displays through audio memes, and community building located in space and place through #studytok

To now have a chapter in the 2nd edition is a really surreal moment of kismet, and I'm so excited to see it published and printed. Also, it's a HUGE honour to get to write with the brilliant Crystal Abidin, who is a truly brilliant, thoughtful, and amazing researcher.

Thrilled to see this chapter and book out in the world finally!

The first edition of this book, published over a decade ago, was a pioneering collection of awesome, field-defining research and scholarship that was super important to me as I was working on my PhD.

If it does burst, I wonder how our administrations in universities are going to justify their all-in-no-questions-asked attitude to incorporating AI into every aspect of university life, whether needed or not, whether harmful or helpful

Just to give you an idea of the range of topics, the two chapters alone that I wrote cover TikTok memes about Palestine and Bernstein's brilliant opera Candide! There's a lot in here, and some really exciting ideas.

It covers a whole range of topics from exciting researchers and thinkers, including explorations of decolonising the curriculum, volunteering, affect, protest, phonocenes and sonic agency, and so much more!

The book became a meta commentary on crisis and citizenship as we collectively navigated uncertain times, and many of the chapters speak to making a case for education at moments of change

The end result is a really exciting edited collection exploring citizenship and education in moments of crisis

Just got home to find the first of two books I have coming out this year (!) has arrived!

This has been years in the making, dreamed up during COVID, developed under multiple governments, edited during ongoing wars, and finished after one of the editors, Geoff Hinchliffe, sadly passed away.

Under a month until the 2nd edition of the Routledge Companion of Mobile Media comes out! The 1st edition was such a brilliant collection that was a vital resource when I was doing my PhD, so it's really wild to me that a decade later I've got a chapter in this with the brilliant Crystal Abidin.

OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT, has a plan to overhaul college education — by embedding its artificial intelligence tools in every facet of campus life.
If the company’s strategy succeeds, universities would give students A.I. assistants to help guide and tutor them from orientation day through graduation. Professors would provide customized A.I. study bots for each class. Career services would offer recruiter chatbots for students to practice job interviews. And undergrads could turn on a chatbot’s voice mode to be quizzed aloud ahead of a test.
OpenAI dubs its sales pitch “A.I.-native universities.”

Every future imagined by a tech company is worse than the previous iteration.

These are the top replies, being financially rewarded for posting this stuff, and the explanation offered by the site’s own AI for why it’s like that.

Anyway just flicking through the Sunday newspapers reading about some minor content infractions that Ofcom might look into at the BBC/Channel 4.

I'm so proud to say that collection is now nearly out in the world, and contains some exciting work, Geoff's last chapter he handed me days before passing, and the work of some brilliant colleagues around the world. It's available here www.routledge.com/Society-Poli... (4/4)

As is the way with uncertainty, my colleague very much leading the charge here and spearheading this collection, the brilliant Geoff Hinchliffe, passed away early 2024. It was a huge loss, and we decided to carry on with the collection in his honour (3/4)

That discussion soon spiralled into chatting about all the exciting authors writing about this, & how great it would be to work with them on something hopeful & thought-provoking. Very quickly we began reaching out & building an edited collection around the themes of citizenship & uncertainty (2/4)

During the pandemic lockdowns, I began chatting to some of my colleagues about what an odd time the pandemic was for citizenship, and how education could respond to the uncertainty of the moment we were in. (1/4)

100%, a real problem here in the UK too - The digital 'la plume de ma tante' approach the digital literacy and education, that is so disconnected from their actual use of technology that it becomes meaningless and dangerous

I see it in real time everyday. I study teenagers in particular, but we overestimate our media literacy. In some places in the US (most) we allow kids to exits k12 with nothing but a “don’t give your info to strangers” media literacy education.

The fact that this report didn't speak to any media researchers, or lord forbid, a woman, is ridiculous.

This sort of uncritical reporting is what leads to legitimising hate speech as banter, asking questions, and curious men.

We all think we're critical, and that we're not susceptable to media. We all think we're media literate.

But any dive into media theory tells us that's not the case, and that media is powerful and persuasive, even if we think we're able to see past it.

And whilst we're on the subject of media research... Everyone under the sun thinks (as this report puts it) that they are "critically engaged, selective and capable of discarding messages that did not resonate with their values".

Of course they think it's just debate and fun. They're 'debate me' bros who want to play off their hateful comments as banter.

But any media research can tell you that language matters, and that all comedy is not equal or without cost.
