Overwhelm is (get ready for all caps) A VERY REAL THING. So is the desire to DO THINGS TO FIGHT BACK. But no one will have the energy to fight back if they burn out. That’s why it’s okay to pause, breathe, and enjoy something silly or weird. Do that today. Here’s a frog.

Going to decompress from current events exhaustion for a few hours at a museum. Nothing like reminding yourself about the long arms of history and culture to help lift you out of the panic of the now.
The creation of un-gridded, loose, expressive maps has been a focus and a blast. Each one has felt like a mini-portrait of the theme of each level, and digging into that has felt like its own reward.
Maps like the one below are for the next Emberland zine, The Work Pit dungeon.

Bonus: here is a weird drawing of a frog named “Bloomgarden the Frog” from a recently pubbed adventure. Putting him in the zine made my month.

2) Do the weirdos KnOw they are wEiRdOs!? No punching down. Buckaroo Bonzai and The Goonies are both Guardians of the Galaxy level superhero squads, just with less computer graphics, and more John Lithgow.
When it comes to inspiration like I mentioned yesterday (Muppets, odd-indie 80s-90s sci-fi cinema), the key for me is three-fold:
1) Is it about weirdos. Weirdos are good. Weirdos should be embraced and supported. Let’s root for the weirdos.
Which feels right.
Inspiration: feeling like I need a good, funny, 80s-90s style indie-sci-fi/horror vibe. The kind of thing that’s just dumb enough to be fun, and smart enough to keep you thinking. Buckaroo Bonzai comes to mind. Big Trouble in Little China. Any suggestions? I’ve been very MUPPETS inspired lately.
