It’s a weird to say this but McDonalds is like, generally pretty good with commercials. In the sense they clearly have a big budget for it - there have been multiple Ireland specific McDonalds commercials and that is fairly rare for American companies at their scale (who may just give us a UK one)

Not a great episode honestly but he has a fun time and that’s what matters. Love a possession episode, everyone gets to act different (and one of DS9’s best in that genre is in the first season.)

If you mean the show premise, yeah. It’s not unlike Xenogenesis or Lathe of Heaven. The fiction Carol writes though is like pirate fantasy slop - romance on the high seas, of sand. “Bad Star Trek” is how she dismisses it (a critique Octavia Butler had for a book of hers she pulled from publication.)

Right. On one level it works for him because he knows exactly how a writer would respond to this scenario. He can think like that pretty naturally for obvious reasons.

He figures romance authors are more fun and interesting (compared to screenwriters, who - from long personal experience - he finds boring.) Fair enough.

I was also keen on the Living Witness Doctor. Which I suppose is also kind of a fanservice (to people who remember the fate of their character from a Voyager episode from a quarter century ago, which I definitely do) but I suppose there’s no reason the original Doctor would have retired I guess.

This guy is a home run hitter. Everyone saw him in The Wire and then in Creed and Black Panther in popcorn stuff, but he also wrecked shop on FNL and Fruitvale Station doing heavy emotional lift and put on performances with such incredible depth at a young age. He's just getting started.

Yeah. Obviously it would cross people’s minds that this scenario could be exploited to live an indulgent life of endless play, and he is exactly the one to do this.

That’s a good point. Like the more connected you are to community the more likely you are to accept this situation, because your chaperone is someone you love.

If the age of the TV antihero taught us anything it is audiences are forgiving of personal problems if the character is good at their job (from Tony Soprano to Don Draper), and she is. It helps she’s Rhea Seehorn, who is a really compelling actress. I digress.

She’s just somebody who has had understandable trauma connecting with people (her mother sent her to a conversion therapy camp! no wonder she has no living family members she is close to) and is dealing with an extremely difficult situation frankly a little better than I would.

I don’t think Carol Sturka is a particularly unlikeable TV protagonist - she’s prickly, difficult and has a lot of emotional walls, but that also describes another Vince Gilligan lead, early Walter White, and she lacks something of his titanic ego and self assurance.

Of the silent era there were a lot of great films - Sergei Eisenstein’s filmography, obviously, but also the likes of Alexander Dovzhenko and Vselvolod Pudovkin. I have a soft spot for Pudovkin’s Storm Over Asia, where a Mongol leads an insurrection in his home country against British interlopers.
