Of the Covenant books, its close but I still have to go with the original trilogy. Second trilogy is better written and plotted, but the first is what caused me to fall in love with the land and its characters. Third set is garbage, IMO.
However, favorite SRD is his Gap Cycle, by far.
I've never understood how the rape that starts out the Covenant series puts so many people off, yet Game of Thrones which is a rape-fest is so damn popular.
I would hope those that slammed the door on Covenant also avoided GoT for the same reason.

Civ7, unlike past Civ games, does not (at least at release) go into the future. The Modern Age ends around 1950'ish after the world wars. Sadly, even our games seem to reflect our backwards-looking culture. No aspiration here!
