🧠 Deep brain stimulation for Parkinson’s disease achieves its best results when a precisely defined brain network operating in the high beta frequency range is targeted. This was shown by a team @andreashorn.org @bahnebahners.bsky.social in both space and time for the first time.👇

This has been an amazing team effort within the RETUNE CRC (sfb-retune.de) together with Roxanne Lofredi, Esther Florin, Andrea Kühn and colleagues from #Düsseldorf and #Berlin! We would like to thank all patients that dedicated their time to participate in this study.

In the future, this cortical signature of #lowfrequency power suppression in the SMA and synchronisation in frontal and cerebellar areas, may serve as a clinically relevant #biomarker to inform DBS programming, targeting strategies, and potentially even non-invasive stimulation approaches.

Using this low-frequency #signature we were able to predict DBS outcome in out of sample data.

Our findings highlight low-frequency modulation across motor and cerebellar regions as a key mechanism of pallidal DBS and re-emphasize dystonia as a #networkdisorder.

In a cohort of 16 patients with cervical dystonia we acquired cortical activity using #MEG ON and OFF pallidal DBS. We found a distinct cortical signature of #lowfrequency power suppression in the supplementary motor area (SMA) and synchronization in frontal and cerebellar areas.

Pallidal DBS is an effective therapy for patients with cervical dystonia. DBS suppresses enhanced #lowfrequency #hypersynchrony in the #basalganglia and modulates sensorimotor and cerebellar #networks in dystonia. However, these anatomical and electrophysiological findings have rarely been linked.

Interpreting EEG requires understanding how the skull smears electrical fields as they propagate from the cortex. I made a browser-based simulator for my EEG class to visualize how dipole depth/orientation change the topomap.

My med school textbook says stimulants like Ritalin treat hyperactivity by “stimulating” the brain’s attention and cognitive control systems. We studied children taking stimulants in the ABCD Study, and the largest differences were actually in arousal and reward networks! Check out our preprint!
