Hard to think of another country that hasn't had enemy boots on their soil for more than two centuries like the US has.
1814. The War of 1812 was more significant than we remember. Not just the burning of Washington, DC, but that did not help.
When you are surprised to hear an actual human voice. It is a feeling these days.
This should be a campaign ad.
Though far from perfect, George Washington was right in warning the country against political parties, among other things. From his farewell address.
The article lists so many examples of Pixar doing just what he says they are not doing... Up came for us all. The Incredibles and Toy Story showed how life sucks in other ways. But Elio went too far? Cowards.
I want more starlight tbh, more distant stars, not the closest one.
Good stuff for historians and sf writers (or both, I know there are more of us out there!) on how change happens and why what we all do matters.
What was your last big positive experience before COVID? For me it was ALA Midwinter in Philadelphia. It was also Restaurant Week so I met a grad school friend for good Italian food and an unforgettable chocolate mousse, and another friend for hot pot!
Hold onto the good things.
Reading this on the way back from a history conference is fitting! I have been thinking about narratives of decline and inevitably, and I write about possibilities and how things could have gone different. So happy to find this essay today.
A personal-scale space opera novel, I loved it and I recommend it!
The hard stretch of "and everyone should have this too" is the great divide I guess.
there's so much bad in the world but there's also people who lift up and carry an elderly bat around every day so he can pretend he's flying again, and that's the part of the world I think is worth fighting for
Finally got around to drawing fanart of Jill from ENDLESS FANTASIA. Her design is super fun and I was hyped when I saw her Vorpal Sword design. I'll get around to drawing Jack and some others soon.
Can't wait to see more of this comic from @danny8bit.bsky.social
REVEAL IS TOMORROW!!!!
Academic conferences are a lot of work, in many many ways, but they also sometimes put you in a room with a few people who are excited about the same weird thing that you are and you kind of info dump about it for a bit.
I have been advocating as a library professional for full text searchable but no LLMs. But also I am hesitant to want a lot of older literature digitized because they are just feeding the machine.
True. Many cats do better in pairs. And better not to separate siblings when you can.
I just break out some paper and crayons, whatever works!
Listening.
Stop talking and listen.
Shut up and let people talk.
You may learn a lot.

Here's an article by linguist Paul Baker and a link to his 2019, which I have not read yet. It was probably not exclusively gay subculture. Some straight folks probably learned it who worked for cruise ships and the like. But hard to say.

It's hard adjusting to doing less with less.
Doing more with less is so last decade. Welcome to the '20s.
And it takes a long time to fix that in yourself.
One of the later arcs of My Hero Academia concerns now top hero Endeavor unsure how to reconcile with the children he alienated, how to train the next generation of heroes, and what being strong means. He got what he wanted but it sucks actually and at what a cost. Something to think on.
May you find some relief in your work.
It's vital. As much as "the Founders" are referenced casually as of late, how much events were complicated and unsettled for decades. Some of my work in progress includes women's Louisiana land claims post 1803 that referenced how their economic rights were more extensive under Spain.
How can you be talking about HISTORY with everything that's going on. 18th century history? Women's history? Waves hands.
Friends, it is precisely because of everything that's going on that we need to talk about history much, much more.
I was do some degree, and I had to confront my biases in college under the tutelage of some patient professors. But I never considered having them written up or sued for standing their ground.
