I grew up with a couple of box fans and no AC, but it didn't make me sad like this!

You know you are done for when the AC repair guy spends an hour on the phone, sitting on the floor of your basement, because he doesn't know what is wrong, then goes out to his van 'to make a few calls' ... but really because he is overheated and wants his van AC.

There are so many ways our scientific community contributes to this country, played out in big and small moments like this. I trust science because it got my feet under me in a way nature never could.

Everyone deserves an opportunity like this.

This morning, I broke my own land-speed (elliptical) record: 2.3 miles in 30 minutes. That's almost a 13-minute mile! This was possibly the fastest I've ever moved in my life.

Before DBS, I was falling a lot and hurting myself. Now, I'm running.

I couldn't hit two miles in 30 minutes at first, but pretty soon, I did. Then it was 2.07 miles in 30 minutes. I count that as a PR. I now announce to my runner son every time I PR with "new legs" (top speed for a new setting).

Well, I have dubbed the most recent setting "perfect enough." (The annoying part is that my body may adjust to it, and then I might need a new setting. Darned adaptable human brain!) Every time I switch settings, it's almost like I need to relearn coordinating my legs.

With DBS, you can adjust a bunch of things. I can adjust amplitude at home. A nurse practitioner can adjust the wavelength of the impulses in my brain, the direction they are cast. I don't understand all of it. My NP keeps reminding me that it won't be perfect. I still have dystonia.

I know there is some woman trying to break the four-minute mile. Kudos to her. My legs are learning to coordinate, so a cool fifteen-minute mile was a big deal for me.

In August of last year, I had deep brain stimulation (DBS). It's a surgery that added electrodes to my brain to scramble some of the extra signals my brain sends to the rest of my body. Once it was turned on, I could run two miles in 30 minutes.

I was often the last kid picked in gym. I didn't know why I was so slow. It took until my 20s to get the diagnosis--dystonia--a movement disorder that not only affects my voice, but made it hard to write, then made my neck tremor. I have had a limp since about second grade. Or I HAD a limp.

I have been running on the elliptical most days for over a decade. It used to be a way to push my weaker muscles and allow myself to rely on my stronger ones to keep going. I run half an hour exactly.
