This was so widely done, abolitionists used the images of enslaved white-passing children to inspire empathy from white people for the cause against enslavement.

The photo of Mary Mildred Williams, an example of a white passing enslaved child, was the most famous that propagandized for the cause:

THIS is the context of the character of Mary. Not the modern lens some cannot see past.

...And thus white owners could maintain the inherited wealth of their "chattel". My mother bounced on the knee of a formerly enslaved man...so imagine the kind living memory of the 1930's the amount of white-passing people who were formerly enslaved and their children.
