it was my understanding that a sorcerer's magic was in their blood or their being, a wizard studied for it, a cleric had faith, etc, and a warlock was essentially a magic sugar baby, and they traded their soul or something else to essentially have the magic of their patron

ok look my only beef with the new 5e rules is that warlocks don't make their pact until lv3. i get it from a standpoint of homogenizing the subclasses all at lv3, but from a lore standpoint, how can you become a warlock before you make your pact???? have i misunderstood warlock all along?
