London, San Francisco and Beijing achieve ‘remarkable reductions’ in air pollution Cycle lanes, electric cars and other interventions have helped 19 global cities slash levels of pollutants by more than 20% London, San Francisco and Beijing are among 19 global cities that have achieved “remarkable reductions” in air pollution, analysis has found, having slashed levels of two airway-aggravating pollutants by more than 20% since 2010. The analysis found interventions such as cycle lanes, uptake of electric cars and restrictions on polluting vehicles had helped to drive the improvements Continue reading...

Reaching net zero by 2050 ‘cheaper for UK than one fossil fuel crisis’ Climate change committee finds move to renewable energy would also bring health, economic and security benefits

Awks for Tories & Reform who want to keep us hooked on fossil fuels: new @theCCCuk report shows transition to net zero will cost less than a single oil shock - £4bn a year - as well as delivering health & security benefits

Fun fact: the first female physics professor in the UK was Daphne Jackson, right here at the university of Surrey. This was back in 1971. Since then, no other women have been promoted to professor in physics here until now with me and Alessia 👩🏻‍🎓🔭🧪

Me talking at Surrey world space week, wearing my pluto: never forget T-shirt A selfie of me in my academic robes with my physics colleagues outside Guildford cathedral before graduation Me, dressed in a Surrey bobble hat and Surrey hoodie, with a Surrey water bottle and Surrey t-shirt. Swag. A selfie of me in my academic robes in front of our graduating class as they throw their hats into the air

Some professional news: I have been promoted to full Professor here in the physics department at the University of Surrey, after 10 years here. 👩🏻‍🏫👩🏻‍🎓🔭🧪 As has my excellent colleague and fellow astronomer Alessia Gualandris ❤️

I hope everyone who checked out @hogg.bsky.social’s white paper on the implications of LLMs in astronomy and shared it across slack channels similarly perused and amplified this white paper of best practices for broadening participation in astronomy!

Apophis isn't just a power mad Goa'uld. It's also a large near earth object that will make a close flyby of the earth in 2029. This paper looked into where it came from and whether we expect more encounters with similar objects 🔭🧪☄️

Say hello to one the 7th known triple double radio galaxy! Its three distinct pairs of lobes likely trace three distinct periods of activity from the central black hole. Very cool stuff 🔭🧪☄️

Voice of Victim

"There was a University lectureship competition

My friend was in pole position. My Head of Department asked me if she was likely to go on maternity leave

I refused to answer

My HoD has not spoken to me since she was appointed -- & then went on maternity leave"

A new space race could turn our atmosphere into a ‘crematorium for satellites’ Planned ‘megaconstellations’ of satellites could cause unforeseen harm to the ozone layer and climate systems. Global regulation is needed before it’s too late.

Excellent piece from @astrokiwi.bsky.social @sundogplanets.mastodon.social.ap.brid.gy & Laura Revell.

This one sentence is the crux of it all 👇

"There is no public mandate for a single company in one country to make changes on that scale to the planet’s atmosphere."

Highly recommended.

"Progressives were told how to vote"

... what sort of frothing BS is this as an excuse? 'Telling people how to vote' is what campaigning is. If enough people do as told to achieve victory, that's democracy.

If you don't like it, leave the country. I'm sure I've heard that sentiment elsewhere...

This is devastating for Carl’s family, and for his IPAC friends and colleagues. We are all shocked and saddened. His contributions to exoplanets and infrared science and the astronomy community will not be forgotten. 💔
