tried something new. still at 64x64, but this time instead of a bug, i drew a velociraptor. kept to the Jurassic park quills rather than a more feathered look this time.

shelves look untouched. everything’s lined up neat, but most of the cans are empty. labels intact, no weight when i pick them up. feels like the food’s just gone.

did a couple more pixel bugs: this time a ladybug in 32x32, and a more realistic centipede in 64x64.
i think i'm probably going to practice at 64px for a while, until i feel like ive got it down.

my phone says i’ve walked six minutes. i should be near the corner store by now, but the street feels longer. the houses are wrong too. the windows are dark, and some of the doors are open.

the fog’s thicker than it looked from the window. it clings. i keep wiping my face, but it doesn’t clear. every breath feels damp, heavy. like the air’s trying to slow me down.

it’s quiet again. too quiet. the crickets have stopped. i keep listening for engines, for wind, for anything. all i can hear is my own pulse. its like i've been surrounded with sound proofing.

it’s been a week now. everything’s damp. the inside of my windows fog from the inside. sometimes, when i wipe them clear, i swear there’s a delay. like another hand’s following mine on the other side.

i left a cup of water on the porch last night. this morning, it had a thin layer of mist over the surface, clinging to the surface of the water and the inside of the rim. there was no evaporation or movement, even when i shook the glass. i put it back outside.

tried to take photos this morning. they came out nearly blank, grey. barely visible shapes and light. even the timestamp corrupted. i cleaned the lens twice. same result.

the streetlights hum louder now. maybe i just notice it more in the quiet. the fog swallows sound, turns everything soft around the edges. even my footsteps sound wrong when i'm outside, like they're a half-second late.

the neighbours say it happens every decade or so. “the sea exhales,” one of them told me. poetic, i guess. but this doesn’t feel like the sea. it doesn't taste like it either. there's no salt. i keep tasting iron when i breathe in.

the fog hasn’t lifted in four days. it rolled down from the hills before dawn and stayed through the week. it smells faintly metallic, like rusted iron. i keep checking the forecast, but it just says clear? I don't want to drive in this.

I wish I could say the fanfiction curse isn't real. But the first time I published something on ao3, my house nearly burnt down only a few months later.
TLDR: I've nearly finished unpacking from the move. New beginnings and all that.
