Academia was killing me body and soul, so this is a good and joyous change. I will accept both condolences (for the killing-me part) and congratulations (for the escape), lol.
Sticking my head back into this account to say—I've left academia! Maybe I'll return some day, but for now, I am free.
Friends and mutuals (present or past) who want to keep up with me (or my new career in tabletop roleplaying games) can find me at @queeringsmite.bsky.social !
Unless you mean you have to actually write down a function. In which case I'm very sorry for your suffering.
Have you considered the algebra student's best friend, the Sylow theorems
I guess when I see my own cookbooks I usually think "oh, right, maybe I'll start doing that again someday" or perhaps I'll think about a recipe in it I wanted to try. But also I usually think of these things as temporarily on hiatus, not permanently abandoned.
*if this isn't true, come on, get a better function.
I would say btw that the identity map from R to R is not the same function as the identity map from (0, \infty) to itself. So for me, domains are very much baked in to the definition of a function. This is probably because I'm an algebraist.
Firm yes, because we'd like "domain" to be meaningful lol.
But you can always* take a smaller domain so it's fine for your example. Eg the identity mapping and 1/x are both defined on (0, \infty) or C without 0 or the strict upper half plane in C or... whatever.
But also no unless your domain is like. Really unusual. Or unless you're defining your function in a really unusual way. So maybe! But probably no.
What do you mean "the" domain
I see y'all out at #JMM2025 without masks and I'm disappointed in you.
Learning should be a communal endeavor almost always imo. I would go to great lengths to find even one (1) pal to be confused with, rather than trying to do it all on my own.
I would do "enough" problems 🥰 i.e. I would work through problems to understand whatever the thing is and then a couple more to test my understanding.
Which is unhelpful for a student with no pedagogy training bc it's hard to evaluate your own work!
But also I think problems assigned vs problems available is very different and students should (usually) do more than is mandatory! So I am pro 72 problems in textbook.
Depends on what the problems are for, I think. Like the problems I provide for an in-class introduction to a topic are way more granular and hand-holdy than homework.
But I would always rather carefully evaluate a few problems done thoroughly than a lot of problems done sloppily or by rote.
Of course!! Behold the single snow leopard, which is an edited version of this stock photo: www.istockphoto.com/photo/young-...

2 seats still open in this one-shot!
Yes, we have critical mass—we are, confirmed, definitely playing on Sunday!
Re character creation - check your DMs 👀
It's even better than that—it's $10 for you and $10 for another player, who will probably use it on more sessions with me, lol. So, in a way, $20 for me!
Referral link, any number of people can use: startplaying.games/referral/clm...
Omg yes just saw! Very exciting!
If you're new to StartPlaying, use this referral link for $10 off your first game: startplaying.games/referral/cm3...
Poking my head back in to advertise...a beginner-friendly festive one-shot, this Sunday afternoon!
This is my last one-shot of the year, featuring talking animals, a mysterious ice palace, and a quest to save a friend. Expect whimsy and lots of roleplay.

This sounds so fun—and recruiting other players is THE easiest way to make sure there's enough people to play!
(But before anybody actually makes a StartPlaying account, let me know, because I've got referral codes for $10 off your first session.)
So if your wife has specific date/time requests...let me know and I'll see if I can make them happen!
I could! I generally schedule one-shots by 1) player request, or 2) my own scheduling preferences, in that order.
A one-shot with one guaranteed player is quite likely to meet its minimum and actually happen. E.g. the 29th date was a player request, so I expect that one to fill up.
In addition to professionally Dungeoning and Dragoning, these days I also do independent math tutoring! If you've got students who need help and can afford a private tutor, send them my way. To toot my own horn, I'm very good at it.
Logistics are amazingly not character-limit-friendly—DM if you'd like to talk details?
For gifting purposes, it's also possible to request a custom booking if you're looking for a game not on my usual schedule—and this can be set up so it's "pre-paid", essentially.
So glad you asked—this is def a thing people do!! StartPlaying does have gift cards, which is easiest. Or you could set up an account for your wife and book a session the normal way, which can be cheaper.
(One person can also pay for multiple seats in a single game, if you wanted to try it out.)
Retweets very appreciated, thanks for your support of this exciting professional change, and so forth.
If you're DnD-curious, and/or want to hear about future games, and/or want 50% off the price of this one-shot, shoot me a DM :)
