USS California

The USS California (BB 44) became the first warship to visit Pearl Harbor proper. The dry dock opened in 1919. The Naval Air Station on Ford Island was also established on 1919 as well

Congress allocated 3 million dollars to straighten the entrance to the harbor and establish a dry dock. When the Great White fleet visited Honolulu in 1908, they had to drop anchor off the coast. The US Navy established a coaling station at Pearl Harbor the same time. (4:5)

In 1875, the Reciprocity Treaty gave the United States exclusive use of Pearl Harbor. In 1893, John L. Steven, used service members from the USS Boston to re-enforce American buildings while Queen Liliʻuokalani was placed on house arrest in her palace. (3:5)

In 1820 the first American missionaries arrived. In 1873, the American military tried to gain control of Ford Island by offering tax free importing of Sugar to the US. Major General John Schofield and Brevet Brigadier General Burton S. Alexander arrived to evacuate the use of the harbor. (2:5)
