Bar charts comparing conventional and novel carbon dioxide removal (CDR) credits in the voluntary carbon market (VCM) for 2022 and 2023. The top half shows conventional CDR (e.g. afforestation, soil carbon, forest management), with many more credits issued and sold than delivered. The bottom half shows novel CDR (e.g. BECCS, DACCS, biochar), with a clear increase in credits sold in 2023, especially for BECCS and DACCS. Across both categories, the number of credits sold exceeds credits delivered, highlighting a delivery gap in the market.
Novel CDR credits like biochar, BECCS & DAC saw major growth in 2023. But across all methods, sold credits still far outpace delivery. A snapshot from #StateOfCDR, edition 2 shows where the voluntary carbon market is heading. Explore more in Chapter 4: www.stateofcdr.org/edition-2-re...

Infographic titled "Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR), A Global Snapshot" from the State of Carbon Dioxide Removal – 2nd Edition.
It shows four key areas:
1. Current CDR Levels (2013–2022 average):
• ~2,200 MtCO₂/year removed
• 99% from conventional methods (forests, land use)
• <0.1% from novel methods (engineered & hybrid)
2. Scientific and Innovation Activity:
• 27,000+ scientific publications since 2000
• 3,800+ research grants awarded
• 14% yearly increase in R&D grants
3. Voluntary CDR Credit Trends:
• Novel CDR credit sales increased in 2023
• Delivery still lags behind purchases
• Most credits are from conventional methods
4. Paris-Consistent Pathways:
• Many scenarios show 7–9 GtCO₂/year of CDR needed by 2050
• Alongside 39–43 GtCO₂e in emissions reductions
• Assumptions vary by energy use, technology, and mitigation strategies

How much CO₂ is being removed today?
About 2 GtCO₂/yr, mostly from land-based methods like forests. Novel methods like DACCS & rock weathering are small for now. See where CDR stands in Chapter 7 of #StateOfCDR Ed. 2: www.stateofcdr.org/edition-2-re...

In 2020–21 the world removed about 2.1 GtCO₂, mostly from conventional methods. To stay on track for 1.5°C, up to 9.8 GtCO₂/year by 2050 is needed. This chart from The State of CDR Edition 2 shows the gap between what’s proposed and what’s needed.
