Professor Forster reappointed to Committee and Professor Le Quéré’s contract extended - Climate Change Committee Two of the UK’s leading climate scientists will serve as Climate Change Committee members for a longer period.

Congratulations to Professor Piers Forster who has been reappointed to the Committee.

Professor Corinne Le Quere’s term as a member of the Committee has also been extended by up to six months.

New appointments to the Adaptation Committee - Climate Change Committee The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and the Devolved Governments have appointed Dr Michael Keil and Mr Ian Dickie to the Adaptation Committee.

We're thrilled to share two new appointments to the Adaptation Committee announced today by Defra and the Devolved Governments.

Dr Michael Keil and Ian Dickie will join the Adaptation Committee from January, with specialisms in water and biodiversity finance.

By 2050, if our pathway is delivered against, annual household energy bills are predicted to be ~£700 cheaper than today, and household driving bills are predicted to be ~£700 cheaper than today.

In many key areas of the transition the way forward is clear. Globally, the world now invests almost twice as much in clean energy as it does in fossil fuels, with clean energy investment expected to reach $2 trillion in 2024.

Range of public spend

Around 65-90% of the required investment will be paid by the private sector. But we will need targeted public investment too. It’s important that policymakers ensure this money goes in the right place - to unlock private investment.

Whole economy costs, relative to the baseline

This will require initial investment, but we expect to start seeing savings in the Seventh Carbon Budget period. We think it’ll cost about 0.2% of GDP from now to 2050. This is less than we thought when we last gave advice in 2020.

We’ve looked at what this means for a household. We commissioned a citizen’s panel and have thought about what this means for each one of us over the next 25 years.

Where the emissions reductions are within the Balanced Pathway

Electrification makes up 60% of emissions reductions by 2040. This includes decarbonising the grid and replacing fossil fuelled cars and heating systems with electric alternatives.

The recommended Seventh Carbon Budget pathway

We have published our advice on the Seventh Carbon Budget. It is in line with previous Government commitments – the Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Carbon Budgets, international commitments, and the Net Zero commitment in 2050.

The COP29 successfully negotiated key agreements on finance and carbon markets but has left a huge amount of work on both mitigation and adaptation action ahead of COP30. Our latest briefing is out now....

1. The UK is well positioned to support the delivery and mobilisation of the finance goal.
2. The UK needs to ensure the Global Clean Power Alliance complements other coalitions.
3. The UK’s NDC must be formalised, with plans on adaptation and finance included.

The Committee also welcomes four expert adviser roles. Professor Davies and Professor Dawson transitioning to advisers on the Adaptation Committee until Apr-25, joining Professor Betts. Professor Willis will advise on our mitigation work.
