Philosopher. Working on philosophical exercises, philosophy as a way of life, and political disagreements. Enthusiastic about: #phenomenology, #mindfulness, #hermeneutics and the medical humanities. https://philosophicalexercises.blogspot.com/

03.02.2026 11:35 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Around this time last year, I grappled with Spinoza's logical demonstrations. Difficult work! But it had a lasting transformative effect on me: I now derive immense satisfaction from the mere thought of the eternity of the universe #philsky

If you invite a musician qua musician, be irked if they show up without instruments. Same with a philosopher who shows up without a cabinet of curiosities. But the musician can reveal their voice to be a hidden instrument, and the philosopher too can work wonders with a good conceptual distinction.

01.02.2026 14:27 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0In the past, I did these drawings after the experience. I had that same wish, of making the observer smaller & smaller & smaller. I bet that, instead of smallness, what I am trying to express could be expressed if I had more skills to give a sense of depth to the drawing

A great ball of light occupies most of the drawing. In the bottom right corner an individual appears very small in the frame and seems shocked by the phenomenon. In between the white rays of light the colours turn yellow and orange, like fire, accompanied with orange wisps of flame.
Another attempt to draw a vision I had. Here I was yesterday, doing Jhana meditation and giving myself the vertigo of the View from Above. All of a sudden, I saw the two combined, a great ball of light, like a star of roaring fire. My only regret is to not be able to draw the person ever smaller.
01.02.2026 09:10 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Can you imagine if people stopped saying "cancelled" (as in "I am cancelled") and instead went back to saying "disgraced"? I personally cannot imagine that. That phrase seems to belong to another world, some kind of lost honor culture.

30.01.2026 08:52 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0A video game where you reclaim African artifacts by looting Western museums. I'm very happy about this. Last time I played a Tomb Raider game, dialogue went like this:
- Pierre: We are gonna get euh so rich from this artifact ! hon hon!
- Lara Croft: No, you greedy frenchman! It belongs in a museum!
I am here to remind you daily:
30.01.2026 08:33 β π 5 π 1 π¬ 1 π 0If you can't opt out, you can't opt in. The health and strength of tradition is the ability to let people leave, or stay on the sideline, without shame.

29.01.2026 19:13 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I think I came up with this phrase, but I'm not 100% sure. If I accidentally stole somebody's joke, i'm sorry, please come forward with the truth :p
29.01.2026 11:34 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I'm so excited about the launch of the International Society for Philosophy as a Way of Life (ISPWL). It's an awesome resource for scholarly work about the tradition of philosophy done for the sake of an immediately wiser and happier life. #philsky

I was looking at the bright moon tonight, remembering that I was seeing mountains upon mountains, floating in the sky. A person walking on this mountain could look towards Earth and see my corner of the world too. I gave myself that wonderful vertigo again. We are so small and there are many worlds
28.01.2026 20:08 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I wish to wake up everyday and to see the immense reality around us as one inconceivably big Desert. Most of it silence and darkness between stars. And then somewhere in the middle of that, our planet, an Oasis. The Desert and the Oasis, both alike in dignity & glory, both equally meaningful.
27.01.2026 16:19 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0However, let it be known that, on the whole, meditation should feel mostly fine the all way through, there is no stormy "dark knight of the soul" that you need to get through before you get to the benefits. Things can get rough, but suffering is a sure sign to adjust the practice, not to trudge on
27.01.2026 11:51 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0The virtue of mindfulness meditation is to increase self-awareness while also decreasing self-consciousness (that subtle embarrassment & dissatisfaction). Predictably, beginners who are not skillful enough yet, do increase self-consciousness. It's painful. Some give up the practice because of that
27.01.2026 11:48 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Can you help me #philsky ? Somebody here had a phil- article about.. rationality & virtue, I think? In it, they were arguing that effective altruism could not account for behaviour where an agent is doing something for the sake of the excellence of their discipline or art. I can't find it anymore.
25.01.2026 09:35 β π 2 π 1 π¬ 1 π 0That is so so very kind of you. I will remember it. I do sometimes run into that problem :)

24.01.2026 09:52 β π 2 π 1 π¬ 1 π 0Immediately after I wake up, I like to remind myself that the house I'm in is a building that is sheltering me from the wind. And in this way, I like to look at everything and remember its survivalist meaning. The Earth is spinning and the Sun shines on this side of it only for some hours.
