Think of this whenever someone gleefully announces that AIs are going to replace artists. The insecurity is plain to see.

Not a rhetorical question, by the way, I'm writing a thing. I want to teach people how to do it. So I'd love to know.

For Spinozists, each level up past 100 gives you access to a new previously unknown attribute of God. That's the end game

The cosmic perspective is a POV from which your life appears to be but a small part/expression of the Cosmos (the immensity of Earth, teeming with life, & the infinite outer space beyond...) What would you say is your biggest friction point when it comes to switching to that state of mind? #philsky

"Whereas philosophy is the culture of the mind: this it is which plucks up vices by the roots; prepares the mind for the receiving of seed, commits them to it, or, as I may say, sows them, that, when come to maturity, they may produce a plentiful harvest."

"Whereas philosophy is the culture of the mind: this it is which plucks up vices by the roots; prepares the mind for the receiving of seed, commits them to it, or, as I may say, sows them, that, when come to maturity, they may produce a plentiful harvest."

Cicero provides the first recorded use of the word "culture" in a nonagricultural context. He uses it here to refer to the philosophical cultivation of the soul. #philosophy #philsky

The same way you can wrap your body in blankets, you can wrap your mind in cozy layers of silence. The silence of an idle afternoon. The silence of conversations that can wait. The silence of loud cars driving by: they do not call your name or demand anything, in this way they are silent.

Human of the Year
YouTube video by Regina Spektor - Topic Human of the Year

I always get emotional at this part of the song
"And though they do not know it - All mankind are now your brothers"

It's like the Stoics say: human kind is one big family, and it elevates the soul to send them all universal love. We live in one big cosmopolis.

Today, take a moment to look out of the window. No! Not that window. I meant the window of Spaceship Earth. With this cool website you can see where Earth is right now in its travel around the Sun. Surely if your house journeyed around the world, you'd admire the view:

I am thinking this in relation to the trope of the cosmic perspective ("spaceship earth", the "pale blue dot"). Those things were pushed on us when there was interest in space- and that was good! But, if like me, it was just dormant, in the far background of your childhood, now you get to try again.

ClichΓ©s are not necessarily clichΓ©s because they were overused. They can be clichΓ©s because *you* were not ready to encounter them when you first met them. Their wisdom felt like an externally imposed force because you could not follow their internal logic at the time. But you get a second chance.

All of this makes me think of the fact that Descartes recommended practising crafts like knitting as a spiritual exercise, which would teach people to become more methodical. He advised studying quote-unquote "the feminine arts of embroidery" .

Science fiction is so philosophically interesting. With its use of thought experiments, it asks us to boldly examine core assumptions that few of us have dared to question. In the scene pictured here, Spock has to tell his boss that he needs a day off because he is so HORNY he might literally DIE
