Close, intelligent, in some cases near lifelong friends are starting to talk casually about the use of ChatGPT in their lives or in some cases are clearly getting paid/perks to promote its use and it’s like watching your social circle slowly, and with a big smile on their face, all join Scientology.

One problem with the reinvention of American universities as giant investment funds is that the people in charge no longer understand that guys like this and Bill Ackman are mental and moral morons who need to be told to shove their money up their asses

Leave the Military Now What does courage demand?

Leave the military or accept that you will be on the wrong side of history.

There is exactly one way to rapidly cut pollution at scale, save money both at the govt and household level, and do it without federal help.

The best fastest thing to do on climate is to just make cities safer for walking and biking. That's it.

Every climate person should be working on this.

i love muting people when they say anything even slightly weird to me. overfamiliar rudeness? bizarre personal question? oblique sexual reference from a stranger? you shall reply forevermore into the void. one day we may finally achieve the dream of muting everyone

I post this a lot but it's just wild that we're letting the rest of the world absolutely lap us on climate change. Even if you don't give a shit about the planet, the US military is simply going to fall behind the rest of the world

The US military was a *very* early adopter of climate adaptation for a reason: they rightly recognized it as a threat multiplier for national security.

When you always imagined yourself doing the deadly serious business of the hallowed White House Press Corps and instead you're taking dictation from an adolescent groyper who's somehow in charge of Treasury payments, it has to mess with your head.

Amazon’s workaround has been to use its LLM models as a kind of translator. It interprets what you say, then hands off the request to deterministic systems — APIs, device controllers, or local Matter connections.

The unpredictability of LLMs is a poor fit for smart home control, where reliability and repeatability are crucial.
I’ve found this works most of the time, but if the LLM translates a request incorrectly or there’s a gap in the API, it appears that handoff can fail. I assume that’s why my bathroom fan sometimes turns on as requested and why Alexa sometimes insists on creating a routine but then forgets to finish the job.

The essential failure of LLMs in the smart home - where natural language processing should shine - is the best evidence that LLMs as a technology simply may not be able to do the things they’re promised

my takeaway from climate week nyc is that "climate storytelling" is a little too much "we must reimagine our deepest souls in relationship to mother nature and the moral abyss of the polycrisis into which we must now stare" and not enough "ok but get a heat pump"
