Almost finished with round 1 of bee animations - all the primary movement, sword, and injury animations. Then I’ll get the controls tightened up and round 2 is swimming, climbing, and special actions, maybe a weapon or two, and I’ll be ready to start remaking the demo again. Still a ways off though

Yeah DQ games are notoriously grind-heavy as part of their mission statement. Except for DQ11 oddly enough, which was also a really great game. They have some great spinoffs though in DQM and Rocket Slime! Rocket Slime IS in my top 5.

Finally got around to posting a new devlog on itch about how I designed the new camera system and the decisions I made. I’m working on part 2, should be done soonish.

Gifs aren’t working sitewide at the moment but hopefully they’ll get fixed soon.

Had a couple hours to myself last night so I finally fixed the last three bugs in Beeknighed’s camera system and chipped away at the animation list. These last two months of work have been rough and things won’t get easier for a while.

There’s a lot of great stuff in it. I liked nearly all the features. The stuff I didn’t care for was mostly the stuff I’d attribute to the movie nostalgia. Taarna and the other recurring characters I felt were a little rote.

Favorites were Bug, the Mercenary, Burton & Cyb, and Lester

picked up the first issue of the rebooted Heavy Metal magazine. I looked into the old magazine recently because it came up with recs I was looking for.

I’ve got positive impressions on this new magazine, though not having been a reader of the past one in its time I can’t authentically compare.

Of the others I sampled, these caught my attention: Starslayer Log of the Jolly Roger, Camelot 3000, Poison Elves, East of West, Fear Agent, Elfquest Hidden Years, The Geek, Nevada, and Rough Riders.

Once I finish Arak I’ll probably read more of Warlord and Arion too, maybe the old Sonja as well.

The flavorful dialogue, historical trivia, fun and unique cast all have made it my favorite. It’s a shame I didn’t care for the writer’s Conan nearly as much, but Conan and Arak are very different.

I expected to like the modern stuff more than I did but I’ve yet to find one that really gripped me

Final follow-up: I wouldn’t say I’m starting a new hobby in comic collecting, but I enjoyed the random lot a lot more than I anticipated. I ended up getting a couple more mystery boxes, but nothing I read stacked up to Arak Son of Thunder. I assembled the whole run of Arak and I’m through half of it

Maybe it’s just a deficiency in my programming skills but creating smooth transitions between states is my worst enemy. Also I was not prepared for just how complicated my player script has to be.

I wish this game was further along but when my day job goes full speed I get very little dev work done. I've got a little more time off so I'll be starting the character controls and animations next. A lot of the twitchy visuals are the result of no acceleration which will be solved soon.

Finally have something looking like a more polished camera. There's still work to be done but the core functionality is there and flexible for the future. It has:

-Controller/Mouse mode
-Auto Follow
-Lock-on
-Strafe
-First-Person
-N64 Controller compatibility

I finally got lock-on camera rotation working as intended. This was the big hurdle that was one of the reasons I decided to redo the camera in the first place. Hopefully I’ll get to some animations within the week and then I can finally post video evidence that it exists.
