The social-ecological systems field is evolving rapidly, but our methods toolkit often lags behind. How do we study transformation while simultaneously creating it? How do we bridge the research-practice divide with approaches that are both rigorous and revolutionary?

Join this session for an interactive exploration of methods that do not just observe change, but actively create it. The session brings together academics, including Andrea Marais-Potgieter, Fikile Nxumalo, and Dylan McGarry, who are rewriting the rulebook on how research can become transformation.

Following the panel discussion, participants will rotate through focused discussions on three frontier methodologies:
โ€ข Projective enabling techniques
โ€ข Method-making and diffractive approaches
โ€ข Empatheatre methodology

Early-Career Hub TEA WITH TREES #1 โ€“ 19 June 2025

Join us for the first social pop-up activity organized through the SocSES Early-Career Hub!

The first TEA WITH TREES will be held on Thursday, 19 June 2025 at 16:00 Central African Time/Central European Summer Time (UTC+2). Register to attend the event.

The main purpose of this get-together is for the participants to meet other early-career professionals in a relaxed virtual space. As tree nerds, we are also keen to get to know your tree friends from around the world! So, during this session, you will be invited to introduce yourself and your research interests, as well as a tree that you have befriended before we meet.

See the very simple instructions for how to prepare before the session below (instructions will also be shared in your confirmation email after you sign up).

In preparation for the meeting, we want you to:

1. Identify a tree in your neighborhood / close to work / another place that you pass through regularly in your everyday life. If you already have a tree that you like, pick them! (We welcome you to use a broad definition of โ€˜treeโ€™).

2. During the days leading up to the meeting, visit the tree and spend some time with it. Befriend it. Observe and reflect: What does it look like? What kind of life does it seem to have had? Which species is it? How does it make you feel? Etc.

3. If you are able to, take a photo of your tree friend and be prepared to share the photo with the other participants in the meeting (i.e. have it available to screen-share on your computer).

4. Join the meeting with a time-of-day-appropriate tree-related drink (examples: juices from fruits that grow on trees, drinks made from leaves from trees/shrubs, drinks made from tree-growing nutsโ€ฆ we welcome broad definitions on what โ€˜tree-relatedโ€™ is here too).

Register to attend the event.
