EU affairs for Spain’s Prime Minister. Used to unsuccessfully try to head EU things. Recovering, and aspiring, think tanker. My views only, otherwise they would be interesting.

Agreed. But there is no reforming the Lisbon Treaty.

Which one of them? 😉

07.07.2025 19:59 — 👍 0    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

Nah. Democratic deficit PHallacy all the way. Will be taught in History books 😉

As if I had ever read any of these two people (one of whom I see often at the schoolgate and yet, curiously, never talk about the democratic deficit phallacy with a ‘PH’)

Or a piece on how there are way too many men pulling the strings of power so the democratic deficit is not only a fallacy, but a phallacy. True fact, albeit an unintended one.

I still hope my English is not too limited despite this Freudian slip 😉

True. Which is even more appalling, because it is a direct translation from French that makes even less sense in other languages.

That’s what happens when you all Brits flee X and I have not posted in a while. But, hey - democratic deficit and too many men in power (especially, backstage): democratic deficit phallacy. Does it work?

Thanks! I am an X native who went cold turkey early 2024 for work and now needs to come to a social media I don´t understand

And it can even be a phallacy, so it appeals to Gen Z and boost some TikTok algorithm

Did you mean “fallacy” or is that quite a racy double entendre?

As I cannot edit this. Of course I meant fallacy, although there is probably a case to bring feminism into this and apply the below term. Thanks @alanbeattie.bsky.social

auch. Thanks for pointing this out. All my British followers have left X, where I initially posted this, so I am now extremely embarrassed

Keep up with me, because I am soon doing one of that awful ✨personal news✨ posts and will be heading to some place where having coined a European political science term that nobody understands will come in handy.

This is what I have decided, just now, to call the democratic deficit phallacy and you should all be hearing from that in the next few months.

So, what to do with a thing - the EU - that is neither supranational nor inter-governmental in a world that has now splitted in two in all areas (domestic, international, gender). It must be political, but it should not. But we want it to, but do we, really?

... it would not be worth it, as the Commission would mostly be regulating boring things like, to quote one of the most illustrous apocrypha we had in Brussels, one Boris Johnson, how much a cucumber could bend. This was never true. But it is even less true now.

Why would a Head of State or Government, who worked so hard to craft a body that reflected all sorts of balances - geographical, political, and, now, gender - put that in jeopardy? They would not, right? The initial idea is that...

Now, one thing to keep in mind is how much the architects of the Treaties believed in technocratic governance. A vote against the President is a vote against the whole College, which is always carefully put together by difficult negotiations involving - mostly - member-states.

.. backing von der Leyen unanimously. Nothing to report on the far right and the far left groups, which have behaved rather consistently since the beginning of this term.

It sees the pro-European coalition that brought von der Leyen to power splitting along interesting lines: Renew with a harsh discourse, the Socialists less so. The EPP (a reminder that Spain´s PP voted for von der Leyen but against her College of Commissioners)...

It shows interesting cleavages in European politics that go beyond classic national or EU dynamics: the motion was put forward by a ECR MEP but argued against by their most powerful national faction that holds power right now - Italy.

The Commission: More power demands more accountability As the European Commission becomes more political, it will need to embrace both the Spitzenkandidaten process and reform.

And deeper. It is about the Commission sidelining the Parliament by using emergency powers almost since the beginning (Article 122). It proves that a super majority in the European Council still matters more than coalitions in the Parliament, as I argued in 2023.

... it is the latest, fascinating, example of the politicisation of the European Union and how the EU has morphed over the past few years of non-stop crises. The pretexte for it is Pfizergate (h/t @matinastevis.bsky.social). But the debate tonight has proven that this goes much further.

There is a motion of confidence (which should be called a motion of no confidence if we were speaking English in Brussels, but hey) against Ursula von der Leyen going on right now that you probably do not know and do not care about. And rightly so, because it will fail. But
