| Folia Scandinavica Posnaniensia
Little late in the day, but I just found out that my article on Wayward Sisters has come out in the latest issue of Folia Scandinavica Posnaniensia! It feels poetic that an article based on my previous MA is coming out as I am about to finish the second one ๐ฅ

These words found me again as I struggle to finish writing my thesis. I know all the words I want to write, and yet... My brain, drowning in the uncertainty of what lies ahead, has decided that it is more comfortable being stuck in 'the known'. Just one of the many ways Rebecca's words hit home.

As I sit and try to make sense of the edits and additions penciled in on the original 1930s working copy of the nynorsk dictionary just so I can code them into the digitised version, I am struck by a beautiful thought. I am a modern day scribe! #digitalhumanities

they were needed

The connection only exists in my brain, as 'peto' comes from the Latin 'peditum', but now we are all left with the mental image of a disgruntled Roman who somehow made it to South America and thinks tobacco smells like farts. No need to thank me! #lexicography #etymology

Now comes the part where my Italianness (?) and inner child are tickled: reading 'petun' immediately brought me to 'peto', an Italian noun for 'fart' #lexicography #etymology

Come to find out, petun/petum came into Norwegian through English < French < Tupi-Guaranรญ. A loanword with a journey as long as the product it refers to. #lexicography #etymology

(notice also how spelling changes, sometimes it's petun and others it's petum in the sources I have) #lexicography #etymology

Was working on a card for 'bispetobakk', a type of tobacco used by the bishop. A nice little note saying to look up 'petun' led me to this source card, so rabbithole it is. #lexicography #etymology

Back in the dictionary office digitising dialect and source cards and I am once again struck by a (non-existing) linguistic connection, so this is OUR problem now. #lexicography #etymology

A group picture of the delegates of the 19th saga conference. They are spread out in a horizontal line that continues upwards as some delegates are standing on the stairs to the floor above.
A picture of me giving my paper, taken from the audience.
A serving of delicious pierogi topped with fried onion in a heart-shaped dish, and a glass of a red mixed fruit juice from Krakรณw.
Picture of a statue in the square of Stare Miasto in Krakรณw. The statue is a bronze, severed head laying on the side. The head is bandaged. The eyes are missing as the head is hollow and people are encouraged to interact with the sculpture by going inside it.
Sitting at home, thinking back on the amazing week that was the 19th Saga Conference in Katowice and Krakรณw. Deeply grateful for the excellent papers and atmosphere, my fingers are itching to put some new ideas to paper! #medievalsky
