This #InternationalWomensDay I want to tell the story of Lilian Vaughan Morgan. I learned of Lilian this past year - what a badass.
Lilian was a leading scientist when women weren't welcome in the lab, nor even the department. But she contributed immensely to the genetics of sex determination

Latest work out today in @currentbiology.bsky.social
We find the fly development gene bicoid is much older than previously thought (~20 million yrs older!) πͺ°π§¬
To pinpoint its origins we tackled the Diptera phylogeny, providing some resolution (many open questions remain).

We mapped optix (again?!) as the switch gene of a natural polymorphism, this time controlling silver patches of a mountain butterfly. Gorgeous RNAi validation, evidence of selective sweeps, introgression
Our miRNA story is now in @science.org ! We found a microRNA, not a protein, that finally solved a long-standing evolutionary mystery of wing coloration in butterflies and moths. (1/n)

𧬠We employ #genetics, #functional-genomics, and #evodevo approaches to untangle the genetic basis of morphological adaptive traits.
7 years ago, I met a junior fellow named Jason Buenrostro who blew me away with a vision of futuristic genomic technologies
Today, we (Ajay Labade, Caroline Comenho) are excited to share our first steps into that future: Expansion in situ genome sequencing
