Last week, I attended the British Ecological Society meeting for the first time and enjoyed a range of fascinating talks. I also had the opportunity to present our project on the predicted impacts of climate change on the germination of UK tree populations. #kewscience @britishecolsoc.bsky.social

It took months to grow seedlings from seeds of some species featured in these photos. Take the quiz by @pagomba.bsky.social and see if you can identify them!

OBS: The feature is helpful for analyses where tracking individual seeds or objects is essential. Otherwise, the original version is still recommended! I have not widely tested this update, so please keep an eye on the results and let me know how it works for you.

With this new method, we hope to open new avenues for exploring the functional relevance of morphological traits and advancing new tools for seed identification. #SeedMorphology #TraitExtraction #ImageAnalysis #Automation #SeedEcology #OpenScience #highthroughputphenotyping (7/7)

We also show how the output can be used to build objective classification categories for shape with high visual interpretability. (6/7)

In the paper, we demonstrate how Traitor's output can be used to obtain representative seed colours for taxa and determine the phylogenetic signal of seed colour. (5/7)

You don't need to know Python to use Traitor! Once you've installed the required software, you just need to enter some basic commands in your computer's prompt or terminal to extract the traits. Check out our instructions here: github.com/TankredO/traitโ€ฆ this is the original version! (4/7)

Traitor effortlessly separates seeds from high-contrast backgrounds. There is no need for training, manual fine-tuning, or thresholding. You can extract traits from hundreds of images from various taxa with just three simple commands! (3/7)

Our approach combines a simple image acquisition protocol with Traitor, an open-source software that 'exposes' seeds, revealing their size, shape and colour measurements. (2/7)

๐ŸŒฑ Hello to everyone interested in extracting seed measurements from images! ๐ŸŒฑ

Iโ€™ve released an experimental version of Traitor, featuring a new option requested by some users: ordered output to keep track of individual seeds during analysis.

Never heard of Traitor?๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿงต
