I just played a mission in an underground mine where the early brotherhood (fo76 is 25 years after the bombs fell) put up a massive battle against a mutated army of local fauna, the way it is set up is such a perfect example of show, don't tell.

There really is some legitimately cool level design in fallout 76. it scratches an itch in a way fallout 4 never can

I was HARD on the Morrowind > all train for years, and while by a few metrics I will stick to that, my playtime in Skyrim had eclipsed and left in a distant galaxy my playtime on Morrowind. Even my first introduction to it on the original Xbox lol

Specifically, the biggest QoL mod that still fits thematically with the game is giving you 100% hit chance until you run out of stamina, at which point it reverts to a stat roll

It's got some great storytelling if you don't mind reading a lot. I still recommend people play it with QoL mods installed to mitigate some of the more antiquated mechanics that haven't aged well.

The artistic direction is incredible, too, and wasn't fully captured in Skyrim's DLC.

The game mechanics are incredibly frustrating to modern standards. We didn't think much of it at the time, though, because this sort of game was still figuring out its distinction from a standard RPG video game. But now, it's a rough play u modded.

It's a game that is viewed often through rose tinted glasses. Incredible worldbuilding, a fantastic story that is a fun twist on the standard chosen one mythology. But it was made in an era where many studios - not just Bethesda - were struggling to figure out action RPG as a genre.

I think it really isn't valid anymore to just discard Bethesda created fallout as "not real fallout" when it comprises an overwhelming majority of the content. You have to at least engage with it as it's own thing.

like i prefer the pre-bethesda vibes but i can appreciate the direction they went with it for what it is. it's still fun, still good, and comprises a majority of my game experience with the franchise.

to be clear this was only kind of meant as a knock on bethesda, moreso people who incessantly cling to the idea of the old fallout games and unable to appreciate the bethesda aesthetic for what it is given that it comprises an overwhelming majority of fallout content now.
