My statement regarding Interior Sec. Burgum and AG Pam Bondi’s visit to Alcatraz Island as part of the Trump administration’s bizarre and troubling proposal to reopen the former federal penitentiary – now a treasured national park and historic site – as an active prison for detained immigrants:

4. Duffy deflects to funding for USMMA to fix water pipes and other critical needs, which I support - but apparently Duffy does not. The Trump administration just proposed a budget slashing $33M from the USMMA budget.

3. Duffy claims he “brought Jesus up from the basement” implying the Biden administration had rolled the painting up and hidden it away. In fact, it was carefully restored by Duffy’s predecessor Pete Buttigieg (a devout Christian) and was being displayed in the USMMA Chapel (its original home).

He is wrong. The Establishment Clause prohibits government favoring or endorsing any religion.

2. Duffy claims the painting is “historic” and should therefore be displayed in the disciplinary hearing room. But the painting was originally hung in the USMMA Chapel.

1. Duffy depicts the 1st Amendment as a one-way pass for him to officially elevate symbols of his Christian faith in a public hearing room with no consideration for other faith perspectives – “we have freedom of religion, not freedom from religion.”

Today, I asked Secretary Duffy about the 1st Amendment implications of him prominently displaying a religious painting in the disciplinary hearing room of the Merchant Marine Academy. A wild ride ensued with Duffy flagrantly “bearing false witness,” to put it biblically.

Let’s break it down.

Supreme Court Clears Way for Mass Firings at Federal Agencies

Trump has fired thousands of federal workers that keep our national parks running, our economy afloat, and our communities safe. And now, the Supreme Court has paved the way for even more of these nonsensical cuts. It’s despicable, and I will remain steadfast in fighting back.

Park Service Is Left Short-Staffed in Peak Travel Season

Because of Trump's incompetent and careless budget cuts, national parks are understaffed during peak travel season. From the rangers who rescue stranded hikers to the law enforcement officers who keep families safe, lives could be put in danger as a result of this recklessness.

It's been 4 days since House Republicans passed the most damaging budget bill in recent history.

I'm appalled by their willingness to sell out the American people, and we're already pushing back in every way we can to hold them accountable for their incompetence and cruelty.

🍽️ Takes away food assistance from 5 million people
💸 Adds $4 trillion to the national debt

He's not just ignoring what Americans need right now, but he's making things worse. It's unconscionable.

In our district alone, Republicans’ disastrous bill will cut over 5000 jobs, rob food assistance from over 10,000 children, and increase health care premiums by over $3000 for those covered by the Affordable Care Act.

This bill is an undeniable betrayal of the American people.

Right now, Republicans are wasting our time trying to eliminate OSHA, the agency that ensures safe and healthy working conditions for workers across America. On #TheFlipSide, Democrats are fighting to protect and expand workers’ safety.

This decision undermines educators and sends a damaging message to LGBTQ+ students that their experiences and stories are inferior.

Public schools should be places for students to learn diverse perspectives – they should not be subject to parents' religious preferences.

Republicans’ latest school vouchers policy was pulled from the Big Ugly bill.

It would drain public resources to fund private & religious schools that aren't held to the same standards.

We’ll keep fighting these proposals that violate the religious freedom of every taxpayer.
