Asylum appeal backlog doubles in a year, Home Office statistics show More than 80,000 people waiting to be reassessed after rejection at end of 2025 – 91% more than a year before

Well well well. If it isn’t the exact thing people like me have been saying for years would happen, happening. Rushing out poorly made asylum decisions in a stupid attempt to clear the initial decisions backlog simply moved the backlog to the tribunal.

Four dead in 24 hours: Israeli settler terror intensifies amid Iran war Settler gunfire killed Palestinians in two West Bank villages as they tried to defend their land. In the aftermath, soldiers’ tear gas induced a cardiac arrest.

Israeli settlers in the West Bank harass, terrorise, destroy, burn, injure and kill Palestinians, their properties and livestock every day, while the IDF is aiding and abetting them.

Victims of child sexual abuse deserve our moral consistency. How did the Prime Minister think Mandelson’s appointment would make them feel? Factional politics took priority above everything else, and that is disgraceful. [2/2]

Everything coming out of the Mandelson files confirms that his links to Epstein were known to all, and that appointing him showed both terrible judgment and a disregard for due process. [1/2]

MPs bridle at Government proposals to curb trial by jury Highlights from contributions by Labour backbenchers critical of Justice Secretary David Lammy’s Bill in this week’s parliamentary debate. Tuesday’s House of Commons debate on the Government’s Courts and Tribunals Bill made headlines after a courageous speech from Charlotte Nichols, Labour MP for Warrington North. Responding to typically insensitive suggestions from Government sources that you can’t have suffered the experience of rape if you raise objections to its Bill, she told the chamber that she had herself been raped at an event that she attended in her capacity as an MP and had subsequently waited 1,088 days to go to court.

Mandelson: his role in the Labour Party also needs investigating The latest revelations underline why we need to restore Labour democracy. If the latest revelations about Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor are to be believed unbridled greed seems to have been one of the driving forces of the people around Jeffrey Epstein, along with a raft of other vices. That certainly applies to Peter Mandelson, who, we learn today, asked for £500,000 severance pay after his sacking as Ambassador to the United States. He didn’t get it. But the judgment of the Prime Minister who appointed him remains under the spotlight, after it emerged that Keir Starmer’s National Security Adviser, …

CAAT - End Zero Accountability Netpol have recently launched “End Zero Accountability”, a campaign building public pressure to challenge the Met’s misuse of police powers that is repressing our right to protest. Although the Metropolitan Police are institutionally racist and systematically resistant to accountability and transparency, the campaign’s aim is to make ending zero accountability an issue the London Assembly is forced to address. Take action now and email London Assembly members, using the guidance below.

'Lammy’s jury trial cuts risk worsening racial bias in justice system' - LabourList Everyone deserves a fair trial, free from discrimination. Juries remain one of the most important mechanisms we have to protect that right.

The right to a trial by jury is fundamental. There are a range of improvements put forward by legal professionals working in our courts to improve efficiency of our system without the need to restrict access to jury trial. That’s why I’ll vote against threat to jury trial today.

A group of people stand outside a historic stone building holding protest signs that read “Justice Needs Juries,” “No Jury No Justice,” “Save Our Juries,” and “Defend the Right to a Jury Trial.” They are participating in a peaceful demonstration in support of jury rights. In the middle of them is the Labour MP Bell Ribeiro-Addy.

Justice needs juries.

Ahead of today's debate on the Courts and Tribunals Bill, I joined lawyers outside Parliament to call for the government to abandon proposals to restrict jury trials.

We need investment and reform to tackle court backlogs, not the abolition of key legal safeguards.

It is therefore disingenuous for the government to claim that this particular measure is about helping victims. It’s a short-termist cost-cutting measure, which will further entrench discrimination and inequality. [2/2]
