just had a traumatic flashback to a job where one of my primary responsibilities was getting Mail Merge to work. no idea what caused this particular horror to surface in my awareness but I can tell you no salary was worth all that

(Page 122 of Excavation: A Memoir by Wendy C. Ortiz)

NOTES ON AN EXCAVATION
Why I Didn't Tell
I didn’t want to be average.
I didn't want it to end.
I was comfortable keeping secrets.
I was afraid of being blamed.
I felt responsible for his acts.
I was numb.
I was told I exuded sex and therefore I must be to blame.
The truth is, I did tell.
I didn't want it to end.
I told an adult.
I grew comfortable with anguish. With hostility.
Tragedy.
I was numb.
That adult has since apologized for his inaction on my behalf, shared with me his fear of the situation, his own newness to the profession at the time.

“Why don’t victims tell someone about the abuse?”

the other night I was in bed CACKLING reading the exchanges between June Jordan and Toni Morrison after Jordan had her lawyer request her work back from Random House. Absolutely hilarious. Girls will be girls!

This week I recommitted to my writing project. I’ve been going to cafés to support myself through the emotionally taxing parts. In two different cafés the songs from the playlist started playing.

You don’t gotta believe what I believe but you can’t tell me I’m wrong.

On the day of my mother’s death I made a playlist of all her favorite songs. A lot of disco, 80s and 90s r&b. I listened so much that summer. Over and over.

L.A. TACO Investigative Journalism Fund By L.A. TACO

Today @lataco.bsky.social launched a fundraiser to help me start their investigative news desk. We're hoping to raise $25k to help pay for lab tests, analyze ICE data that the Daily Memo's been compiling + work with more freelancers. Been dreaming of this for years!

I watched Wuthering Heights (2026) and all I can say is I'm happy for the art department. It looks like they had fun.

Massive strike at Kaiser Permanente enters third week

🚨 New from me

I spoke with 3 healthcare workers on strike at Kaiser Permanente.

“It is not the same Kaiser… This is no longer a place to get your care. This is now an investment firm that dabbles in hospitals.”

I’ve decided to do a road trip to LA. yes this is my attempt to set achievable goals

Struggle is not the goal.

It’s the method.

To get free.

Too many people imagine struggle is the goal, so any acts of worldbuilding that prefigure freedom are dismissed as incidental, as distractions.
