Are you sure about that? The Uniform Vehicle Code, which forms the basis for traffic regulations in every state in the Union, specifically profits opening a car door unless it is reasonably safe to do without interfering with other traffic.

Actually, virtually every state has the same law. And no, that is not a legal exception.

Drivers should always open their door with the opposite hand. But there have been enough attempts to encourage it that it's pretty clear most drivers won't. The best solution seems to be requiring warning systems in motor vehicles to prevent opening the door if anyone is in the door zone.

Not true. California law requires that drivers only open their door when it is safe to do so, without interfering with any other traffic. Because of that, unless there is evidence that the bike rider was breaking the law, which he was not in this case, the driver is always at fault for dooring.

You'd think with such a dominant car culture and the prevalence of parallel parking, people here would look before they throw their doors open. But they don't. Not even when other cars are coming. It's wild!

Drivers don't like it when we ride 5 ft from cars to avoid the doorzone, but then we are blamed if they hit us with a door.

I'd add pedestrians in beach cities nearly getting run down by kids in their early teens on overpowered machines. But yeah.

As a driver, it makes me nervous seeing cyclists riding against traffic, but they can still be avoided. As a cyclist, I start yelling that they are supposed to ride with the traffic. Those cyclists still don't deserve to die. r0 deaths is as unacceptable as 1.

I agree. Avoiding salmon bicyclists requires a focus on the road that too many drivers don't seem to have, though. We need to teach bike riders the dangers of it, particularly recent immigrants who may have learned to ride that way at home. And demand better infrastructure and car tech.

My apologies. After writing tonight's ebike collision in Oxnard, I've run out of time and energy to work on the usual Monday post. We'll play catch up on what we missed on Tuesday.
