I'm pretty sure that rectangular thing can extend and dock with stuff

breech loaders on basic turrets, loaded with as much grapeshot as can fit in it. You'll never get the accuracy needed for using solid rounds with this tech level, so the next-best solution is to fill the area with as much high-velocity cast iron as physically possible. Still won't hit often though.
