They're extremes of what happens to people under these frameworks.

Nanami exists to teach Yuji the value of duty and hard work, and also the price you can pay for that.

Higuruma exists to absolve Yuji of the events of Shibuya, and look inward at his own crimes.

Whereas nanami finds peace by the end of shibuya, having done his utmost to save the students, Higuruma still needs to contend with his crimes, still holding on to the culling game points of the first 2 people he killed.

Nanami returns to jujutsu out of a sense of duty, as much as he won't admit it. The rat race isn't for him, saving people is.

Higuruma discovers it at his lowest point, at the moment the justice system has failed. Absolutely going back on the refusal to be a judge.

Both men live in a japanese society of extremes that they had to be exposed to as adults.
Nanami on the front of a workaholic, trying to make enough to escape it all and retire.
Higuruma on the side of trying to reform the justice system through his pro bono work.
