When I have a sound effect the player's gonna hear a lot, I'll sometimes randomize the pitch so it doesn't get repetitive and annoying.

But that still sounded pretty bad here, so I thought I'd try clamping the randomizer to a scale. I think it sounds pretty cool.

The trailers had this feeling of inevitable doom. Of fighting to the last breath against overwhelming odds. Of "Current objective: Survive"

That's what players expected. And the game delivered something less interesting instead.

Yes, if you paid attention, you could figure out where they were going with it. I clocked that in the demo and it instantly killed my interest in the game.

But it absolutely wasn't advertised as an alternate timeline. It was advertised as a prequel following the tragic events that led to BotW.

Which isn't to say a plot twist should NEVER go beyond audience expectations. But it needs to be done with artistic intent, and audiences can tell if it isn't.

Deus ex machina time travelers didn't feel like artistic intent. It felt like a cowardly way to avoid giving the game a tragic ending.

It breaks the specific expectations, but most plot twists still play in the ballpark of the audience's expectations. There's a reason the most iconic plot twists tend to be from mysteries and thrillers: the audience is prepared for a plot twist, they just don't know what the twist will be.

Advertising sets expectations. If the twist fits within those expectations, it can be exciting. If it doesn't, the audience can feel cheated.

Many were interested in the game specifically because they expected a tragic downfall prequel. Instead they got an alternate timeline happy ending.

When I was a kid struggling with stuff my parents and therapists would get me these self help books for teens and those books would start out with something like "So you're at a party-" or "So you're with your buds at the big game-" and I'd be like "this book has already lost me"

Also if your concern is source material accuracy then you should be optimistic about what we've seen of MCU Doom so far, because idk what they have planned with the RDJ stuff, but a guy in a green cloak and metal mask who rules a country called Latveria is WAY closer than the last two attempts.

Like I'm not being gatekeepy, you don't need to read the comics to enjoy or criticize comic adaptations. But if your criticism is "But the source material!" then you're kinda talking out your ass if you haven't actually read the source material. And it happens SO MUCH with comics in particular.

I talked to someone who was complaining about how the MCU was doing Doctor Doom because he's such a cool character and they're ruining him, and at some point he said Doom has electric powers and used to date Sue, and I tried very hard to not be rude when explaining that was just in the 2000s movies.

Comics are so weird because an adaptation will come out and people will be like "I can't believe they're disrespecting the source material! 😡" then as you talk to them you realize they haven't actually read the comics and by "source material" they mean an adaptation that came out when they were 14

Date's kind of amazing because the comic relief pervert is the absolute worst anime trope, but they somehow managed to make him work as a protagonist. I guess unlike other examples of the trope, he never comes across as predatory to the women around him, just pathetically obsessed with porn.

Kotaro Uchikoshi is an impressive writer because he'll introduce a group of the most irritating people you can imagine and somehow make you kinda like most of them by the end of the game without ever making them any less irritating
