It's not bad, just disappointing after 2. Where 2 hit almost all the important notes from the original, 3 cut a ton of stuff, including boss fights, entire locations, and a significant game mechanic. And in their place was instead a bunch of scripted sequences that hurt replays.

The thing about the whole "expose yourself to opposing ideas" thing is I know a lot of people who have moved left by doing this but basically nobody who's moved right by doing this.

I also wonder if the Grace/Leon dynamic in the RE9 we got might have started as an idea for Rose and Chris. Then after scrapping the Rose direction, they still liked the idea of using dual protags to explore horror and action, so they swapped in Leon and created a new blonde woman for Rose's role.

Did they just decide the Winters story didn't need a third game? Was there an internal disagreement on the direction of the series? Was it because reviews and fan response to RE8 wasn't as strong as expected? We know they reworked RE4r after RE3r was tepidly received, maybe similar thing here.

My assumption is that as of the end of RE8, they fully planned to wrap up a Winters trilogy with an RE9 starring Rose. But then something happened, plans for RE9 changed, and they cobbled together the Rose DLC out of existing assets to give at least some closure.

It's still weird how RE8 so confidently ended with a tease that Rose would play a big role in the future, then a year later they just tied that loose end up with a hasty DLC, and now RE9's totally moved past the Winters story.

I wonder what happened behind the scenes that made them change course.

Doesn't really need a whole video. It's essentially the same reason RE4 soft rebooted the series. CV, REmake, and Zero all underperformed, so Capcom decided there wasn't enough demand for classic style RE anymore.

RE9 is good but I really hope the balance shifts to Leon at some point because I'm getting kinda tired of sneaking around invincible one hit kill stalker enemies as Grace

RE9 is so funny man, it'll switch to Leon and you'll breathe a sigh of relief and start roundhouse kicking your way through zombies, then after only 10 minutes the game goes, "Okay, enough power fantasy, back to Grace and the scariest shit you've ever played :)"

I think its reputation overstates how hard it is, because A) most of us were still learning to grasp 3D level design when we first played it, B) it's slow and tedious to navigate, and C) there's a couple easy to miss keys that made a lot of people think they were softlocked.

MS as a company never actually cared about video games. They don't make Microsoft Money. Xbox was a means to an end.

Then the game changed, and now that end doesn't matter. But Xbox was too strong a brand to just ditch like Zune, so they've been trying to figure out something else to do with it.

The whole point of the Xbox from the start was to Trojan Horse their way into taking over your living room. The Xbox One finally pulled the trigger on that plan, and failed catastrophically as smart TVs took over. I think MS just hasn't really known what to do with Xbox since then.
